A few possibilities
1. Front disc's may be warped
2. Rear drums may be out of shape
Easy way to check gently pull the handbrake lever when going forward if the drums are out of shape you will feel vibration through the lever.
3. Front wheel bearings may have excessive play
4. Suspension component(s) worn
wishbone bushes are a common failiure on Escort's
Hope this helps
Best wishes

SOURCE: when i apply my brakes on my 98 contour the front end shakes

Sounds like you have bad brake pads or rotors ..if you are not mechanical take them in somewhere ......if the brake pads are left too long the metal will wear away the rotors and then it all needs to be replaced....hopefully just the pads need replacing but it sounds like if it is shaking that bad rotors are gone too. usually the pads will make a sqeaking sound when the get to worn so you know that they need replacing.

SOURCE: I have a 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier. Front end

You may have a bad engine support. Open the hood and inspect the engine support (the one holding the engine to the chassis). It should be made up metal with hard rubber inside. If the rubbers are cracked or missing compared to the other side, then you need to have this replaced.

I have a 1991 chevy lumina( euro) I installed rotors and front brake pads on it and sometimes the front end shimmies and shakes when I apply the brakes. I do have another question. But I 'am really hoping...

Warped rotors will always shake when on the brakes. You say sometimes, so I would look into tires out of round or out of balance. Also, take a good look for any loose front end parts or excessive play.

Replaced left front caliper and both front rotors. front of car shakes when I apply the brakes but stops when I push harder. Shakes again if I have to slam on the brakes

you may need to bleed the brakes and clean the rotors of any brake fluid. usually tires get bad if u had this problem before. i mean rotate the tires see if this stops the shaking.
