Was driving truck and stopped at a light.truck started to stall so i put into neutral. started driving again and truck started to stall and backfire as i continued to kepp it running. truck stalled and could not get running again

I would check the dist.cap and wires.this seems to be a place to start.check all vacum lines.would also check fuel pump pressure.you need to determine if its fuel or elect.may also consider cam sensor.

There are numerous things that will cause this problem. If the check engine light is on, have the codes checked to see if there is a problem the computer has found to cause this issue. Even without the check engine light on, there may be a code stored. You can also do a visual inspection under the hood for any disconnected hoses causing vacuum leaks. These are the best places to begin with diagnostics
The check engine will be on if the key is on but engine not running . This is normal. If the check engine goes out when the engine starts there are no codes present . Did you check the fuel filter . Sometimes when a filter is dirty there is sedement laying in the filter canister . When the pump starts working the flow picks up the sedement and plugs any remaining open screen and stops the fuel completely . The engine stops . When the flow stops the sedement falls back allowing flow again. and the engine will run for another while . If the filter is old it should be changed anyway . Also when the engine stops check to see if there is spark at the spark plugs while cranking the engine .
It sounds like your alternator might be starting to go bad and the Battery Light is coming on because it is not charging the battery correctly. Have your Alternator checked with a volt meter, it should be reading 13 to 14 volts if working correctly. If not, replace your alternator.
My Pontiac Grand Prix is also a 99, it has 216,+ thousand miles on it, it runs great, idles good, I need to replace the oxygen sensor tho as it shuts off on me while driving or sometimes coming to a stop. You might try checking the fuel filter and pump as well.
