You'll need a torque wrecn and a degree tools (most auto parts stores sell them). Torque sequence is 15lbs, then 37lbs then 130 degrees.

Sorry, I added that above by accident. What is the make and year again? S40's weren't made prior to 2000. On most Volvos you have a hydraulic tensionor, you use a long 14mm wrench to pull it over, then pin it in place with a drill bit. You'll see a dog ear on the top of the tensioner with a hole in it. Some models have changed the belt sizes and routing so I need to know what you actually have to be sure I am answering you correctly.

2007 Volvo S40 will not start

alternator belt braking would not stall the engine but your dash would of lit up like a christmas tree. you will need to have the engine on an obd reader to see what the problem is. did the belt snap or was it stripped ? alternator over load would cut the engine out check the fuse in the engine fuse box there is 2, 80 amp fuse in there check these are fine.

2007 volvo S40 will not start after replacing alternator belt, smell gas after trying to start

I am thinking faulty injectors and/or excessive fuel pressure in the fuel manifold . Run fault codes again ensuring that the cables used and the procedure to connect is adhered to as there will be a fault code recorded but not being read

When driving I heard a belt squealing while the air conditioner was on. I turned off AC and there was a slight bump under hood and then battery light and brake light came on on dash.  When checked...

The Alternator belt. This belt is used to transfer the rotary power from the engine to a number of ancillary units.
In your case it looks as if the belt drives the Air con, Alternator and brake servo unit.
Any good autoparts store should be able to supply the correct type. Note when posting car related questions quote the Model, Trim level, Year, Engine Engine type and Size as manufacturers can fit different belts to the same base model. The same goes when ordering your new belt. For emergency use you can get an adjustable belt. If you are fitting your own belt there is normally a slide mechanisim on one of the ancillary units e.g the alternator the bolts on this unit need to be slackened and the unit pushed twoards the engine. This will allow the new belt to be fitted. Do not be tempted to overtighten as this puts excessive strain on the bearings of the ancillary units.

ALTERNATOR BELT

its really really easy to find without diagrams. find the alternator (metallic colour, has cooling fan on front with pulley and 3-4 wires coming off back of it.
then follow the belt. should go to crank (down bottom) and probably power steering or air con as well. hope this helps
