1996 gmc safari, 6cyl.-distributor gear broke off. removed old gear. replaced with new dist. can't seem to get timing right. any ideas?
Roll the engine around until the compression stroke on number one cylinder (both valves are closed) and stop on top dead centre. The rotor should be pointing to the number one terminal on the distributor. If it is not extract the distributor and replace it with the rotor pointing to number one. That should be it. Hopefully their are no other issues relating to the original breakage so you should make sure the new distributor is spinning normally.

anytime a distributor is taken out the rotor button has to point to # 1 cylinder!! if it has moved off of # 1 cylinder you can fix it! take out # 1 spark plug, use a straw to stick in cylinder on top of piston, move engine buy turning damper pulley with a large wrench. when piston is at the very top then it is set on # 1. point rotor button in distributor to # 1 wire on cap. if it is a hair off then you can adjust it by moving distributor either way. dont forget to put plug back in. damper pully is in front of engine.if need be have someone to help bring it to # 1. when piston is up top, this is tdc.
