Have scanned for trouble codes --and vehicle going into limp mode
Randy's answer is correct you need to have codes read there should be a check engine light on and also a wrench sign on the dash if that's the case your truck might be a drive by wire throttle body motor (electronic)and this has failed look at the throttle body if there's no cable to increase the idle then it's a motor and it's N/G good luck Stephen
It may be going into limp mode. When your truck is having certain issues, to protect it from damage the computer will put it in a mode that actually is stopping it from going any faster. Several things can cause this, and you can probably have O'Reilly or AutoZone put it on there diagnostic computer for free. They actually may have the code that is telling you what is putting it in limp mode.

Look under the dash on passenger side and just to the left of the blower motor housing you will see the 4WD control module.Remove the 2 screws holding the module and let it hang down and your resistors are behind this.Remove the 2 screws holding the resistors and remove.
Now I am assuming you have manual climate control and not electonic.

That year Explorer was notorius for rear ABS sensors going bad. If your ABS light is on as well this may be your problem. Also they were notorious for 4WD modules going bad. This problem is more expensive. I would advise you to have it checked on a computer to see what codes you have.

I had same problem on my 2002 explorer. Its either the computer module, or the electric solenoid on the transfer case. In my case it was both. The computer module I had done twice in 14 months.

Yes, just removed #17 fuse and reinstalled and everything returned. Maybe bad connection, or maybe something was drawing current and that's it's function, (cut power) but it just didn't reset? (Owner's manual lists one function of Circuit #17 as "Battery Saver')

The ABS light is for the Anti-lock Braking System. The MIL will illuminate if there is a difference in wheel speed sensors signals to the PCM. So you might have a wheel speed sensor that is going out on you. Does the light come on at low speeds, or just higway speeds? You could take the vehicle to a local parts store and have them pull the codes for you and that will tell you which speed sensor is out of whack. Also road grime, dirt and gunk buildup can cause speed sensors to give false readings. Hope tihs helps you out.......
