A 16 year old car with no doubt over 150,000 miles on it will have lots of internal wear in the transmission, especially if transmission maintenance has been neglected as is usually the case. Eventually component wear will show up with problems selecting more of the gear ratios rather than just the one gear as it is now.
There is no cheap fix for transmission component wear. You either have to repair your own transmission by replacing all worn internal components or you have to buy a rebuilt unit.
Trans jerk is a sign of wear and tear. You don't say how many miles its done? Is the trans fluid level correct? When was it last serviced? Have you asked a good home mech/garage to ride with you to see fault?
check electrical connectors to transmission sometimes wires break and loose connection also check to see if the spaded ends are closed well enough to make a good connection. if all good then check the harness for chaffing wires if none found then suspect it must be the tranny computer.
Suggestion only! If you had no shake before the tranny work, then retracing the steps backwards is a good way to find the new problem.
Go back to the tranny shop and complain #2 go to another tranny shop and get a professional to look at their work.
If the trans.oil is dark brown in color and smell's burnt your tranny is probably on it's last leg.If tou have bad pump pressure or low oil you will have to rev the eng to get it to build enough pressure to move.Your detent cable or kick down cable is for passing, when you step on the gas when passing someone this cable is pulled causing the trans. to go into a lower gear and when you let off the gas it should shift back into a higher gear.if it's out of adjustment it will kickdown to soon or to late.If your car has alot of miles it may be in need of a filter and fluid change, but usually when slipping occures its to late and you will need a replacement tranny.Hope this was helpfull.
first check the level of the tranny fluid the truck needs to be running and in nutral if you have fluid it is probably the modual, the shift control modual comonly goes out the dealer will tell you you need a new transmission take your truck to a good transmission shop and have them check the modual tighten the bands and flush the transmission I had the same problem and that fixed the problem, the cost was around 350.00 also check to make sure that you dont have any leaks in your tranny lines. hope this helps
This is a common problem on some GM cars. There is a pressure control valve in the side cover of the transmission that needs to be replaced. The transmission does not have to be rebuilt. You will need to get a side cover gasket also.
I am assuming you have the 200 4R, I just replaced my tranny fluid on my 87 GN, took about 6.4 quarts. I also have an external tranny cooler and let the tranny drain for about a week.
I would start with 4 quarts and start her up, dont drive anywhere. Keep adding and checking while the car warms up. Every now and then get in and shift through the gears, pausing in each one a few times, ALL GEARS. When the fluid level refisters on the dipstick, take the car around the block slowly at first then fast enough to shift into 2nd, depending on factors 3rd or 4th. Head home and leave engine running, check fluid again and adjust accordingly.
