2005 jeep grand cherokee has trouble starting, after it has been driven short distances (no seeming problem due to overnight or longer parking.) When fiddle with the gearshift and move slightly out of park then back in again, seems to start. Been 4 times in shop: checked battery, corrosion, tightened all connections. Happens intermittently but enough that worried about getting stranded. Any suggestions as to source of problem? Mech says hard to track problem if it is not doing it at the time. Kept in shop overnight--multiple startings--no problem there. Now, did it again today. Has been going on for about 2 months. Suggestion?

Sounds like the neutral safety switch is either out of adjustment or is a bit worn out. Try starting in neutral when it does this...If that solves the problem, have the switch checked.

Had similar problem with 96 Jeep 4.0L engine. Tracked it down to the connector for the distributor pickup. Spliced in another connector and hasn't stalled since. Also, have you had any codes? Easy way to check on Chrysler products: turn key on, off, on, off, on (not starting) and watch the 'engine light' on the dash. It will flash off/on. Count the flashes with short pauses between and longer pauses between code. When you get a 5 count and 5 count, that is the end. This may also help

Idle prolem could be a dirty throttle body or sticky air idle control motor.
If the Jeep is a 6 cly. the adjustment for the belt is the power steering pump.
