The lights on the little knob switch thing are now not working, I attempted to get on freeway and it started smelling like melted plastic or burning gears. ... it drives fine in town as long as long as i dont go over 40-45 mph. Any ideas?

I would guess the brake fuse ( this does not use the same fuse as the tail lights/blinkers) or the ground for the brake light bulb.

You need to get under the suv, there is a linkage under there that has 2 grommets. They dry rot and then fall out. Once that has happened the 2 pins that hold it together give way and the link is broken. If all you need are those 4 parts its $12 at the dealer. If you also need the adjustable metal linkage that joins the shifter to the transfer case you will have to order that too, sometimes it falls off when one end gets loose. It will swing around and hit the drive shaft and get yanked off. If you need more detail let me know.

You need to check the cv joints in the front end or the u joints in the front drive shaft. If none of the above then the problem is internal in the front diff.
