I have a 2002 Honda Civic Ex, it has been over heating but only in stop and go traffic, never on the freeway, i have replaced, timing belt, water pump, cooling fan relay, cooling fan switch, flushed radiator and thermostat. There is no white smoke coming from the tail pipe and the oil is clean, when the car gets hot i can smell the coolant pretty strong, car has never completely overheated but gets about 3/4 of the way til red. Ran a diagnostic and no codes came up. every time i change a part the problem stops for 1-2 weeks but then starts again.
With your description it sounds like your fans are not coming on, also sounds like the problem was never solved, sounds like you threw a lot of money at your problem also... check to see if the fans are coming on at the right times, seems like a n air movement over the radiator since you say it only gets hot in stop and go traffic... well when your driving at a constant highway speed guess what you have air movement through the radiator... check also a clogged ac condensor with bugs, pressure wash it out so the air can pass through it easily... please rate my help thanks
Replace your radiator cap and verify that your head gasket is not leaking internally or externally and that your electric fan is running properly.

no leaks and i havent added any coolant, i just recently had the timing belt and water pump changed and I asked them if there any leaks but they did not find any. fans are kicking on regularly (cycling)
Any leaks, or do you have to add coolant? If so, how much and how often? You seem to have covered the cooling fans, but are they kicking on when the engine temp starts rising?
