Most likely the transmission needs to be flushed. As transmission fluid ages it looses its ability to build pressure especially once it heats up. It is possible the transmission may need more but this is the first step. Only use Honda or Honda equivalent fluid as others will likely cause damage long term. 1st thing to do is test the system for codes, the problem is most likely a failed or stuck shift solenoid indside the trans, have you ever serviced the trans, sometimes a fluid and filter cahnge will cure these kinds of issues.

SOURCE: Inconsistant transmission problems on 2003 jeep gcl

Many times this is caused by either a sticking electronic shift solenoid in the transmission or the trans fluid and filter need to be replaced, has the trans been serviced, it should have been done at 60,000 miles.

SOURCE: 1997 sL1 Saturn manual transmission hard to change gears

The dipstick is behind the battery, below the master brake cylinder and is not the clutch reservoir. It has a red flip top handle instead of a ring like most dipsticks. It was hard for me to find due to engine grease. I had the same problem and was able to see that I was low on fluid (only a little) and adding fluid helped the problem. Mike, thank you for answering my question. however, im broke and need to know if there is a cheap fix that might solve my problem apart from a mechanic. please help

I have alott of experience rebuilding civic transmissions its a shaft and selector issue in the transmission no fluids will help that situation.they are super simple to rebuild only a 3-4 hr job n a 800$ rebuild kit+ selector arm happens alott to civics usually from reving it up n dumping 1st n going quickly to second the selector breaks but you can still shift around fine but first n then reverse will go out usually. drain the fluid and see if you can get a magnet tool up there n see the chunks of metal sometimes if its a clean split you cant tell until its apart I had one customer just had a slight kinda clunk into 3rd gear ,.. snapped off selector n it was a tiny seemingly "easy fix"" too its a 80% chance tho id say.hope it helps

Changing the fluild ( all of it) might fix it if your lucky. Something overheating sounds possible. Any cooling system problem can cause this and cleaning the cooling system and flushing out the transmission cooler in the raditor may go a long way towards fixing your problem. dity raditor and or coolant will cause this problem. I you clean everything real good and then go and drive it and it goes longer but still does it your in for another rebuild. this time put in a new raditor to make sure the transmission lasted as long as it's supposed to. It's possible the throttle pressure was'nt set right and the trans upshifts too early and therefore the transmission gets too hot cause the engine is going too slow to make good transmission pressure and the slipping transmission overheats. again even after corrected it'll still do it as the transmission internal seals are adamaged by heat and it'll need to be rebuilt again.

97 Honda Civic Manual Transmission Issue(s)

Providing there are no oil leaks at all, some transmission stabilizer may help. Any experience i've had with a whining 5 speed, is not good. Usually it's a bearing on it's way out. Try some of this, and see if it makes any difference. RISLONE® TRANSMISSION STABILIZER

Gear engages a little late

Your transmission is slipping. Check the fluid to make sure it is full. If not bring it up to full and see if the problem persists. If it does you probably have a major problem~make a note of whether it does it worse when cold or at running temperature, if you experience any shudder when changing gears climbing hills etc to determine possible faults.
