SOURCE: 1987 MSD Distributor Cap Sparkplug Placement Help

First you need to determin witch one is #1 on cap Witch usely is the one directly behind carb. or throutle body. than its perty strate forward from there rotor runs clockwise. Cap only goes on one way. Food for thought when you chg. cap or wires one at a time is the rule even for a seasoned mechanic.

SOURCE: my 1987 audi 5000s is losing tranny fluid dripping

If it is not dripping much, then just put in a deflector so you don't get smoke. There are conditioners you are supposed to be able to use to soften old and hard seals, to reduce leaks. Don't know if they work or not, but can't hurt I suppose. Take it so one of those self service car wash places with a high pressure hot water spray. Clean off the engine/transmission, so that you can tell more where it leaks. If it is from between the engine and transmission, that is over $300 and probably not worth it. But is could be one of the cooling lines or something minor.

SOURCE: 1987 GMC Jimmy Distributor cap and Rotor replacement

To replace the Distibutor cap and Rotor [they fit together as a unit when you get the two parts together]. First you need to mark with masking tape [or other such tape you can write on] the number of each spark plug wire and attach the tape firmly to each wire. DO NOT make any mistakes! Make sure you are numbering each wire with it's correct number based on the spark plug w/ wires position! Depending on if you have a 4,6 or 8 cylinder vehicle you will have 4,6, or 8 spark plug wires/spark plugs, and each has it's own number. You'll need to find out which is the number one plug ,number two plug, number three plug until you correctly number each one! You will end up with wires [either 4,6 or 8] going around the Distributor Cap. The one in the middle of the cap is the "COIL WIRE" leave this one unmarked cause you'll know that one stays in the middle. NOTICE- YOU need to positively find out which plug is which number with a VEHICLE MANUAL that shows you clear photos/diagrams of which plug/wire is which and i'ts position on the cap. Once you ID each wire then you need to mark your new DISTRIBUTOR CAP with the exact numbers in the exact place as the wire was.Now you can remove the wires off the old distributor cap and remove the cap and old ROTOR. Put the new ROTOR in. Place the CAP in the correct position as before and place the NEW Spark Plug Wires in there correct places based on the number you put on your New Distributor Cap.

Distributor cap wiring 1987 audi 5000 2.3l where is #1

Bummer - nothing worse than pulling all the wires to replace wires or the cap, then realizing you're not sure which goes where. That's the 5 cylinder engine right? If so the firing order is 1-2-4-5-3 and cylinder 1 is the first cylinder at the front of the engine.

With the cap removed you should see either a groove or notch under the rotor assembly and/or in the distributor housing under the #1 cylinder. The distributor rotates clockwise.

Otherwise I think the distributor cap has two taller towers for the wires to attach to, when the cap is on, the two towers would be at the "bottom" and the left (closest to front) tower would be cylinder 1.

You can also look for the TDC mark on the flywheel (at the front below the cooling fan, etc) itf that's lined up, the rotor on the distributor will be at or near the spot in the cap where the #1 wire would be attached.

If wired incorrectly the car will backfire, not start, etc. When testing use as little gas as possible to start the car. I don't suggest trying to attach the wires in the firing order sequence, guessing until you have the #1 wire in the right place. But it's been done before by lots of backyard mechanics.

We have a warm start problem with Audi 5000S Turbo 1985. Apparently gas is not available to car if engine is hot and turned off. Fuel pump seems to be ok. Was told it might be a valve in the fuel...

If the car is ok when cold then it is a heat related fault. The first thing to look at would be the coolant sensor for the ECU (this is like the auto choke) it is maybe giving an incorrect reading.

1987 Audi 5000s won't turn over

Do you have headlights if you turn them on. Sometimes if a battery is clear dead and you jump it and it will depend on the gauge of wire in the jumpers whether it will start right off or not. Another scenario is the battery you bought is not good or fully charged. If you have a battery with less than 11 volts it probably won't energize the starter.
