Is it the check engine light or the oil light coming on? Where is your dipstick? and if it is the oil light, put a quart of oil in before you go anywhere and then buy a dipstick. If it is the service engine light only just drive it for 20 miles without a problem.

Yeah, I am sorry, but there is no transmission dipstick. The transmission is filled through a small stand pipe in the transmission pan and you need to take it to the dealership unless you would like to climb underneath it and do it yourself. Makes sure you don't put too much in either, because then it causes other problems. If possible try to add a half of a quart and get it to the dealership. I hate when they make things a lot harder than they need to be.

1998 mercury mountainer making a clunking noise when taking off to fast also transmition wining and seems like not going into over drive what would cause this

Worn drive line parts like universal joints will clunk as well as transfer cases problems, have it inspected on a car lift for worn parts. As far as the vague description of a transmission concern not sure what to tell you, maybe the transmission is in need of an overhaul. Do you have a check engine light or OD light flashing on the shifter?

Were i chek transmition oil

On the back of the engine towards the firewall, you'll find another dip stick colored red just like the engine oil which is colored yellow. Check the transmission oil with the engine running and the transmission oil at operating temperature. Pull it the dip stick out and wipe it clean and take the second reading, there will be markings on the dip stick to where the transmission fluid should be and never over fill your transmission, thats just as bad as having not enough transmission fluid.

When and How to check transmission fluid

if it is a manual transmission you have to check it from under the car by opening the fill plug. if fluid starts flowing out your full if not than you need to service it.

if it is an automatic it will be close to the firewall and hard to spot. but it is there. if you have 45,000 miles on it you should have the transmission serviced whether it is an automatic or manual.
