1996 Mercury Tracer Questions & Answers
Having to physically pour coolant every few days, winter and summer,
I assume the coolant is low when u install fresh coolant. ( No pun intended) The cooling system is a sealed system, if u are adding fluid constantly it either means u have a leak or it's burning it. Do u see any leaks, puddles or smoke coming from the engine compartment? Is the coolant mixing with the oil or visa versa, or a hot running engine? could be head gasket. Check spark plugs for coolant or oil. coolant leaking into passenger floorboard? Heater core. Poss coolant switch. If no luck, have the system pressure checked by a shop & stop wasting $ on coolant. good luck.
What makes a 1996 mercury tracer cluck cluck
Could be any of several things. If it's a bad bearing, especially a connecting rod bearing, it could trash your engine if it fails completely. It could also be less catastrophic, but it needs to be checked out.

Problem is usually the speed sender failing when speed gets too high. In some case the speed gauge itself is damaged. In Mercury the speed sender is located in the transmission. The part is difficult to test without professional equipment. Repair is done replacing the speed sender. If that does not fix the problem, work on the instrument panel speedo.

No heat thermost replaced, radiator
I would follow the 5/8 inch heater hose to the firewall and look at the heat control valve position when the selector on the dash is toward cold. Then I would move the selector switch to hot and look at the valve position again. If it has not changed the cable is not operatiing the switch and needs replacing (providing the sdash selector is operating.

turn the heater upto full heat (no a/c)to see if the temp goes down if it does then change thermostat.(i assume the fan(s)work)regarding the car accelerating on its own this is an anti stall feature on most cars(not all)especially VW group,it is also very comfortable in heavy traffic conditions when you dont need gas to move.(put the car in 2nd and crawl along with the rest)
