aaa the north star motor is notorious for small leaks in the fuel rail lines ,seeing it's older look over the fuel rail ELDO used a few little rubber hoses in and line and at bends in the fuel line an gas can deposit under intake manifold ? rough idle could be a vacuum leak, again go over your hoses and replace any in question.
My brother has a Ford F150 that does this the problem turned out to be a bad mass air sensor (little black box with plug in on it located next to the air box on the air intake pipe
Bad carb or fuel injection issues- the system is fuel rich (black smoke) and also fuel rich system can make the idle low. Many things can cause this but thses are just a few.
Purchase new egr valve gasket with screen on it. The motor as it get older produces more carbon it then begins to break off and when the valve opens it get caught in there. i have cleaned mine several times and finally found the gasket at napa for around 22 bucks. All you need it 10mm wrech and 10mm socket with ext. takes around 10 min to do.
