check the grill area under the windscreen ,, you should be able to acess this with the bonnet open,, there are 2 drains to allow water to be drained ,,, these can get blocked by leaves and dirt causing water to build up and get into the car through the heater
you possibly have a leaky windshield. Try turning the heater blower on high , close all the windows and doors and get a squirt bottle with a soapy solution and start squirting it around the windshield edge and see if you get any bubbles from where you squirted the soapy solution. if you do WAH LAH you found where the water is coming in from.
lift the bonnet and have a look ,one of these is like looking at a 1930 s engine ,yes to everything and even try putting a piece of card in front of rad to build engine temp up ,it will work as these motors are so primative
clean out under the bonnet at the back of the engine behind the firewall ,the outlet pipes are blocked so rain is going through the grill but not running away
look under the bonnet and where the wiper motor is their is a drain pipe either side of the car ,poke them out to clean them out their blocked and the rain cannot drain away
check your ht leads try turning the engine over in the dark looking under the bonnet to see any sparking on ht leads get someone to turn over the engine while you look if you see sparking chang the leads they have cracked
lift the bonnet and remove the plastic trim below the windscreen (passenger side) this covers the pollen filter check for distortion this will be the problem. replace the pollen filter it will be damp.if the trimis not too distorted refit or buy new. The trim acts as a rain water gutter and has been fitted incorectley, have you recently had a service ?
Assuming that rain solely causes the problem :
Air intake & Ignition/coil/spark system would be the primary victims to water contact or ingestion.. and both could be resolved by continous starting attempts.
Have you modified either of them recently??? :)
Where Does the Air to the carburettor come from ???
Is it close to the outside of car(near radiator via oval plastic pipe)
or above the motor via a standard metal one ??
I'd try to simulate the symptoms to find the cause. gently hose vertically like rain focusing mainly on front window + bonnet areas untill you feel its wet enough to have problems going.
Open the bonnet and look for any unwanted water or leakage.
If your car has the first method of air intake mentioned above, is it totally free of water.?
Also inspect the firewall (Rear wall of engine bay) maybe the plenium chamber is leaking water from the wiper grille area into/onto your ignition coil or spark system.....Via rust or a hole or somthing like that..
