My 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe has a check engine light that comes on occasionally. It sometimes comes on for a while then goes off. It stays on sometimes until the engine is shut down and restarted later. What could be the problem?

I am a mechanic ..most people ask questions about these foreign hyundai motors ..below is an example of engines that basically if you ask about a Hyundai Xg 350 ,xg300 ..well allow me to hammer 90% of your questions in case you want to grab another motor ..these motors listed will work on 90% of all hyundai products ...Look at the starter sizes ,,all the same for the selected models ..then look at the motor sizes ..This will help you in solving some problems most do not give the specific questioning 100% NEW REPLACEMENT STARTER FOR STARTER

as for the check engine light sometimes the tightness of your gas cap can make that light come on and stay on, try tightening it or loosening it just a little bit. have no clue on the rest of the issues or the possibility of it all being linked but i know the cap cap has been the culprit for check engine light issues i've had when mechanic checked and said nothing wrong!
The vehicle will run fine for a while until that cat goes out all the way, the only thing that might get you away cheaper than $1,000 is a wrecking yard cat, but then you still take risks. If the cat is bad its bad nothing to do but replace it.
