The correct torque specification for the FRONT axle nut on a 1999 Mercedes ML320 is 490 Nm or 361 lb/ft

if the 8th number om your VIN is a "J" then this is the correct prossess 3.1LTorque sequence --------- ' 6 2 3 7 ' ' 5 1 4 8 ' --------- Step 1: torque in sequence to 37 Ft/Lbs Step 2: turn an additional 90 degrees recheck final torque in sequence *** CAUTION ***engine uses Torque To Yield head bolts (TTY) thatpermanently stretch during the initial installation.New head bolts must be used when cylinder head isreplaced or re-installed to obtain proper torque.Always coat bolt threads with the proper sealant.

Install the lower cylinder head with a new gasket. Tighten the bolts in sequence as follows:

1. Step 1: 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
   
2. Step 2: 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm)
   
3. Step 3: Plus 130°

Tighten in sequence to 29ft.lbs then tighten in sequence to 58ft lbs. then loosen all bolts. Then tighten in sequence to 33ft lbs. then tighten each bolt in sequence 90 degrees then tighten each bolt again 90 degrees

1st u must use all new head bolts, that said follow this factory procedure from the manual.

NEW HEAD BOLTS MUST BE USED WHEN CYLINDER HEAD IS REPLACED OR RE-INSTALLED TO OBTAIN PROPER TORQUE. ALWAYS COAT BOLT THREADS WITH THE PROPER SEALANT
