This is a common problem with V6 Passats. VW put out a TSB on this a few years ago. The code is telling you that your catalytic converter (driver's side, I think) is bad. It's more than likely not bad.
VW put out a TSB on this a few years ago. TSB 05-13. The cause of the error code is basically an over sensitive ECU (computer of car/engine) and the fix is to have your ECU flashed with the latest and greatest software. Depending on your mileage they might do it under warranty - you'll have to check.
It's still possible that it might be a bad catalytic converter - and the dealership might try to tell you that either way. Call VW (1-800-822-8987) and ask them about the TSB (I couldn't find it online).
Tell the dealership you want the ECU flashed - it's much much cheaper than a cat. No sense replacing it if it's not bad There is a federal warranty on catalytic converters - 8 yrs or 80k miles...

could be time for a tune up also check the spark plug holes for oil if the valve cover gasket are leaking into there can also have a bad coil if the check engine light is on have it scanned at a auto parts store (most do it for free)the code can lead you to the bad cylinder exp code p0301 is cylinder number one p0306 is cylinder number six and the same for p0302-p035
For 1998 VW Passat V6 the fuse box is located on the left side of dashboard behind a plastic cover (for left hand steering wheel vehicle). On inner face of the plastic cover you will find the fuse diagram. The cigarette lighter fuse for 1998 VW Passat V6 is placed in the fuse box / relay plate fascia 1, (driver's door open). See pictures below:
Sounds like the whole shifting unit. It has a printed circuit strip unit that usually goes bad or a switch on the side of the transmission. What code is showing? You need to have it scanned at your VW dealership to correctly diagnose your exact problem
most of the older cars have a cable driven speedo but newer cars are elecitronic it could be the little motor behined the gages or the wiring going down to the tranny check the cheepest first
