Have a thumping noise, thought it was cv joint. Removed axels, they are good. Noise is there only when car is moving. Frequency inceases with speed. Wheel bearing roll smoothly.

It's weird that the noise is more frequent when it's going faster but it's not the wheel bearing. I have a similar problem, except the pounding noise is accompanied by a bumpy bearing. I'm not sure what's causing your problem, but I think I'll take my car to an auto repair shop. http://www.vincesauto.com/services

Check inner and outer tie rod ends. With engine off and car parked lol grab half shafts and shake both individually was there more play in either one? If play is excessive change both. If you can hear them rattling that is excessive.

Loud noise from front axel as i drive

sounds like the cv joints have gone bad on axle, get underneath and grab the axle and see if it wiggles or moves. if its a howling noise, its a wheel bearing!

What are the symptoms of a bad CV joint on an all wheel drive Volvo

if your cv joint is going bad check the rubber boot located on your front axel if there is a tear in the boot once dirt gets inside the boot depending on how long youve had the noise the cv joint will have to be replaced sometimes the first signs are a clicking noise when turning coming from the cv joint if you catch it early you may get away with just replacing the boot there are two ways of doing this depending on the vehical one is to buy split boot it wraps around the axel and is held together with tiny bolts and nuts the axel doesant have to be removed useing this type you still have to remove the damaged boot and clean the cv joint thoroughly i suggest useing brake parts cleaner be carefull not to get it on any rubber parts or lines then before installing the new boot pack the joint with grease and the boot the other way the old joint must be removed you will have to remove the complete axel assemble the new joint and axel will come as one unit depending on the vehical your balljoint or joints may have to be removed also this method to me is the prefferd way this will assure all is new its more involved but better in the long run

I 'am takeing it for granted they mounted the original tire on a new or used rimm if they did you might have a broken belt in the tire from the pot hole insident, or it wasent balanced, or there could be a problem with the drive axel maybe bent or a bad cv-joint.

Dodge Caravan, 2001, CV joints have 1/4" longitudinal play/noise

CV Joint Axle Replacement - How to Repair or Replace

Over time the rubber boots of the CV joints can become cracked, torn, or otherwise compromised. Once moisture and dirt get into a CV joint and grease makes its way out, the CV joints days are numbered. Signs of impending failures are a click-click-clicking or metallic crackling noise while turning and accelerating or a clunking upon deceleration. While one can repack, reboot, and rebuild CV axles, it makes more sense for the average do-it-yourselfer to procure replacement units and swap out the old axles. If a boot is torn or missing, it is possible to save the joint if caught early enough, but usually the damage has already been done. Replacing or servicing the entire CV joint axle assembly may be the smarter move since replacing a boot may involve removing an axle, which may also involve removing half or all of the vehicle's brakes and suspension.
