When i lock the car, all flashing lights seem to be in order, alarm goes off intermitently after a short time,, I have dis-connected the battery, so as not to disturb the neighbours, the car is a T reg, so im not to fussed about having an alarm, just dont want it going off all the time.

Check all door switch connections. I may be the not so obvious. The alarms work off of current sensors. If you open a door and the sensor detects a drain in current, such as the light coming on it will set off the alarm. Conversely if your battery is not holding a charge within certain range and the current drops, the alarm will think someone opened a door and will activate. Check for anything that might be putting a significant drain after the car is sitting.. Including your battery . Especially if it is old.
Do you have a sun roof? Check the drain tubes and see if there plugged. The sun roof can clog and causes a waterleak under the front seats where your alarm module is located. Pull of the mats and look under the seats for any wetness or signs of corrosion.
Faulty door status switches (integrated in the door lock) or hood switch. hard to figure out which ones are bad without a diagnostic tool

this sounds like a faulty 'boot' switch. Many of the older models had issues with picky switches

the best i can find from the information i have is it's near the tank (not all that great information) be that as it may i would suggest it is likely a problem with the coil pack or you have water in your fuel. you haven't mentioned how it idles. to test the pack... just unplug one spark plug wire at a time ... if the engine idle doesn't change you have likely located the problem... if it is indeed water in your fuel... add a couple bottles of gas line antifreeze to your tank.... it contains alcohol and will **** up the water.

Folks, Just found my problem ...... There's a flexible conduit (corrugated rubber sleeve) between the driver's door and the door arch which contains the wiring loom for the drivers door central locking/door speaker/electric windows/mirrors etc....discovered when I slipped off the sleeve that 4 cables in the wiring loom had broken due to repeated flexing when drivers door was opened/closed over the years (2001 Audi A4). Resoldered broken wires and insulated same....now working better than ever again ...ie dashboard back lighting seems brighter than it had been for some time? Also drivers door loudspeaker is back in action again (hadn't noticed that it had gone).
It's kinda difficult to reseat the rubber sleeving correctly after the repair job...will probably use some silicone sealant on the sleeve to ensure that there is no water ingress to wiring loom afterwards. I'm not too impressed with Audi design people after that, should have used cable that has a better flexibility rating (esp on drivers door!).

this is info i pulled but not sure exactly what engine you have...here are a couple though
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
Fig. After the negative battery cable is disconnected, remove the wire terminals from the starter solenoid
Fig. Remove the lower starter mounting bolts . . .
Fig. . . . followed by the upper bolt, then remove the starter from the transaxle housing
Fig. Lower starter bolt locations-1994 2.0L, 2.0L ABA
Fig. Remove the upper starter bolts
Fig. Mark the location and length of each starter bolt
Fig. When the solenoid is energized the starter drive is pushed out and meshes with the flywheel to crank the engine
NOTE
The engine must be supported on 1990-97 Passat models as the starter mounting bolts also support the engine-to-transmission mounting surface.
If necessary, label the small wires before disconnecting them.
On 1990-97 Passat models:
Release the number 50 electrical connector from the starter.
Remove the starter mounting bolts, while supporting the weight of the starter.
NOTE
On vehicles with a manual transaxle, there is a bushing where the starter shaft fits into the bell housing. If the shaft or bushing is worn or if the starter has been jamming, the bushing should be replaced. There is a special bushing removal tool available but a small inside bearing removal tool is usually sufficient.
Install the starter into the transaxle.
