I am agree with Brent, also try to clean the idle air control or throttle body to see it run better that way.
Could be lots of things, I'll start with ignition. Could be spark plugs or wires, when its dark start the car, open the hood and look to see if any of the plug wires leak electricity(you will see arcing etc.. if any do replace the set.
Pull plugs and look at them if they are older replace them. You can also pull each plug wire while its running and see if the idle changes if it does not that cylinder is not running.
Could be fuel, Look up how to check mass air flow sensor and fuel injectors. Other areas of fuel could be an issue but these are two major ones that can cause a car to run lean or rich.
Could be compression in on or more cylinder borrow a compression tester and check each piston to ensure they are at the right range.
These are the most common issues that cause a car to run rough but there are others if these all check out.
