Couple of reasons
there is no gas in the system and the low pressure switch has stopped the ac compressor
there is too much gas in the system and the high pressure switch has stopped the compressor
there is a blockage in the tx valve and the high pressure switch has stopped the compressor
The climate control module has failed and stopped the compressor
I am thinking a leak and no gas.

Treed55508,
Try this solution. I have had the same issue three times. A Chevy tech told me that if it keeps doing it, to replace the blower motor, as it seems to be a chronic problem with the blower having to much resistance and thus burning out the resistors. I suspect that you probably had lost one speed first and then more. It has happened both ways with me, once the entire thing went out at once and then the other times it goes one speed at a time.

SOURCE: How to replace a heater core in a 1994 chevy 1500
As with all vehicles it seems the first part that they build around is the heater core. It is under the dash above the floor housed in a black plastic sealed box. Sealed with goop. Locate that box and start removing everything around it that is peventing taking the cover off. Of course disconnect the heater hoses under the hood a thefirewall.
Warning it is never as easy as it sounds.
