No broken wires under shifter console, fuse is good for ignition
Does it go into the lock position ? Will the shifter go into the park position ? Is it a automatic transmission ?
Electronic Park Lock (EPL)/Ignition Lock Cylinder Control Actuator: If the vehicle is equipped with automatic transmission and a floor mounted console gear shift, it has an ignition lock cylinder control actuator system in the steering column. The ignition lock cylinder control actuator purpose is to prevent the ignition key from being turned to the OFF position when the transmission is in any position other than PARK and the vehicle may still be moving. The column ignition lock system consists of an ignition lock cylinder control actuator, and a park position switch that is located in the automatic transmission shift lock control switch. The ignition lock cylinder control actuator contains a pin that is spring loaded to mechanically prevent the ignition key cylinder from being turned to the lock position when the vehicle transmission is not in the PARK position. If vehicle power is lost, and/or the transmission is not in the PARK position the operator will not be able to turn the ignition key to the lock position and will not be able to remove the ignition key from the column.
There should be a hole in the bottom of plastic steering cover or a rubber cover that comes out . you can stick your finger up there an there is a button you push that will allow you to take out the key !
2006 chevy cobalt How to fix key being stuck in the ignition 2006 Impala shifter problems
Testimonial: "Hi Jeff Appreciate your feedback, I actually push that button everytime i shut off the car to get the key out, I was hoping for a more permanent solution, if I replace the ingnition lock cylinder, will that do the trick ...any suggestions would be appreciated, thx again Frank"
That is one of the fixes in the diagnostic flow chart , after eliminating some other thing's
lock cylinder solenoid plunger and spring
Range Selector Lever Cable Adjustment .
If you have email address I'll send you the diagnostic flow chart !
The last one of these that I fixed was a 06 cobalt , same thing key wouldn't come out the ignition ! Had to replace shifter Assembly , It was some plastic part that pushed on a micro switch that sent a electrical signal to the key lock solenoid ! Did this side job for friend , got the shifter at the salvage yard for $20.00 I had sevice bullitin for this an forgot what I did with it !
Look on left side of shifter assembly there should be a micro switch An a plastic paw piece , it came off on the cobalt an got under the microswitch . If this happens the wires can be good but still won't send current to the key lock solenoid !
Take plastic cover from around the steering column an see if the key lock solenoid is being turn on an off !
Because if you can remove the key by pushing that button it's not the lock cylinder !

If it is a floor shift models it is a broken wire on the solenoid on the right lower of the shifter. Take the console out by unsnapping the trim from around the shifter and removing it. Next take out the screws (7mm, 2 of them on either side of the shifter) and there are 4 more of the same size inside the cubby in the console, exposed by lifting tthe cubby lid, emptying the crap out of it and lifting the felt up. Take all of the screws out and then move the shifter to the 1st gear position and remove a phillips head screw on the front of the shifter to remove the shift handle. Now lift out the console. You will more than likely see the broken wire when you look at the lower right side of the shifter close to the floor. Repair this connection by cutting all 4 wires leading to the harness plug and splicing 4 extra inches of wire to each and also repair the connection that broke out of the harness plug. The only option I found was to buy a fuel pump wire harness repair kit to get the connecters needed. The problem is that GM did not put enough slack in the wires leading to the shift interlock solenoid and when repeated drive to park shifting is done will stress this connection. Sometimes it will make it not disengage the shift interlock solenoid and you can not get it into drive from park, other times it breaks the wire for the key release. This should fix your problems, otherwise you have a problem with the BCM. SHould save you all a ton of GM service department spending.
I had the same problem with one of my cars. The shift interlock cable was stuck. I had a floor shifter.
