You don't mention the engine size or if it's multi-port fuel injected or throttle body injection. At any rate it sounds like a fuel delivery issue. You might try changing the fuel filter. Or have the throttle sensor checked. Best thing to do is to get a repair manual for your make/year/model. I've found the Chilton/Haynes repair manuals, which you can get at your local parts stores or Walmart to be very helpful and they do have trouble shooting that lead to most common issues given the symptoms. It should also have a check engine light coming on with the codes that can be read by an OBD-II reader. It may well need a general tune-up.

I had the same problem. It was the fuel regulator that was bad in my 99 Regal. Hope this helps.

He has gotten a bad load of fuel. Try a can of dry gas to emulsify the water, but if there is too much for the dry gas to handle, the tank may have to be cleaned. I would also replace the fuel filter also, the gas may also be dirty enough to restrict the filter.

It sounds like the motor stops receiving fuel at some point. This can be caused by either a clogged fuel filter or the fuel pump going bad. It's a tricky problem because in order to check the pump you need to have a fuel pressure guage hooked up to the fuel line and on top of that the problem would have to happen just at that time so you can see the pressure drop.Change filter first.Sediments in the filter may be floating into the outlet periodically stopping the fuel flow, the car shuts off and the sediments float away enabling the car to start again
