Why would battery power to my ignition switch come and go?

Car starts fine most times. Other times, light does not come on when door is opened and ignition switch does not work.

That may or may not be easy to find. It sounds like a loose electrical connection somewhere, but power to the ign. switch comes from the battery to the power distribution box to a large maxi-fuse or two, and then straight to the switch.
No courtesy light either? Try the headlights when it won't respond. If no headlights, almost certainly it is between the battery and the distribution box. Very helpful if you have a test light or voltmeter to check for power at the maxi-fuses when the key won't respond. If power there at those fuses, then check for power at the fuse panel under the dash. Some will be hot at all times (like the brake lights fuse, and the courtesy lights fuse). You are checking if power is coming from the distr. box into the cabin to the fuse panel (and to the ignition switch, also,) through the junction block connector from the engine bay into the cabin.

To check for power with a test light at a fuse, here is how: all fuses have 2 testing ports or slots at the top ends of the fuse. you ground a test light lead to a good ground (battery negative post), and then use the tester probe to touch inside the slot on the top of the fuse. You don't need to take the fuse out to test for power. If testing a maxi-fuse for power, you don't even need the key turned to on-those fuses are hot at all times, so anytime the battery is connected, the fuses have power to them. If there is power, then you would move to the inside fuse panel and test there for power in the same way. The small fuses also have the test ports on their top ends. Find the brake light fuse or the courtesy light fuse and test there for power. If you have power at the distribution box, but none at the fuse4panel, it may be a bad connection at the junction block, where the wires enter inside the cabin. Good luck.

Bad connections at battery? Side post battery terminals are very prone to corrsion and poor connections. Other possibilities are weak/frayed fusible link, bad ignition switch.

New battery In mercedes no power

I'm not a car mechanic, but, it sounds like you might want to check the fuse to the ignition switch, and, if that fails, it might be a problem with the Start Safety Switch on the transmission. Good luck.

1994 C280 wont start

You left the key too long in the ignition switch. This sent an alert as if it were being stolen. Remove the key from ignition. Lock all doors. Wait about an hour or so. When you open the doors, put your foot down on the gas pedal and release. Put the key into the ignition and turn the car on.  Make sure you have the shift in "Park" position.
