Your ground to the battery could be bad. Check where it bolts to the frame as well as the battery possibly replacing the ends. If the car shuts off when the hot wire is disconnected from the battery then you have a bad alternator. Good luck.

I was driving yesterday and my engine stalled and then all the dashboard lights went completely out.

From what I have seen at my dealership, people with similar problems like all electronics randomly shut off or many electronics shut off randomly. In these cases you would be lucky if it is a bad battery, could also be the alternator not putting out current and the battery draining down. What this would cause would be a lack of proper voltage to the modules in your car which would cause them to shut down. But usually it is a complete failure or intermittent failure of the cem (central electronics module) this is the computer that controls all of the electronics in the car. If you plan on taking it to a dealership to have them diagnose it I would plan to be able to leave it with them for a while if it is the cem sometimes it's a quick diagnoses but other times it can take a while because cem problems can leave a list of trouble codes stored in the car, it can make many of the other modules in the car that it provides power to appear to be bad, when it's really just the cem not getting correct power to the other modules to run properly. Also wether you take to dealership or trusted mechanic or work on it yourself always remember that for whoever looks at it for this or for anything in the future, if the car is scanned and a failure trouble code comes back for any module ALLWAYS check the connectors and wires going to it for corrosion before replacing anything. Corrosion will block power and electrical signals that make modules appear to fail when all they really need is a cleaning on the pin connectors or some wiring replaced. Hope this helps and good luck.

Sometimes the car starts sometimes it doesn't...when it doesn't, if you wiggle the battery cables it will start. we checked the battery, it's good, only a year old. Also, when you're driving, sometimes the...

If it will start after you 'wiggle' the battery cables, you don't have a tight connection. Remove the cables, clean all the connections with a wire brush, then make sure you firmly attach cables. Connections MUST be clean and tight. If you continue to have trouble, check the connections at the other end of the cables (starter and ground), as the 'wiggle fix' may be a loose or dirty connection at the other end of the cables. This is probably also the cause of your elec. problems, hopefully once connections are cleaned and tightened properly, all will be fixed.

If you really suspect a short, try running it in the dark. Be very careful of the fan(s) of course, but you could wiggle wire bundles and you may see the arc! Worth a shot, you can't see some shorts in the light>

1998 chevy lumina that the power shuts off when trying to start.

Battery terminals are loose or have corrosion on them. Check both main battery lead's at the battery and + where it is connected to the starter and - where it connect's to the body and engine.

Electrical system shuts off.

i have a theory, have you tried replacing the door ajar switches, one might be bad,the computer might be seeing a load on the battery for a while after vehicle shut down, and because of this the computer does this to shed loads so the battery is not killed,or the problem could be the GEM module which controls all the power, its actually part of the fuse box and would need to be replaced as a unit but a little exspensive,so i would try the door switches first, hope this helps

Dim interior lights, power locks wont work......

Try looking at your battery. Check the cables to make sure they are tight and clean. Brush the corrosion off with a wire brush. Now, if you have a wiring schematic, find the ground for the interior lights and clean it up too. Oh, put vasoline on it, and the battery cables, to keep them corrosion free. Check the other grounds in the car cabin too.

Blower motor not always working

when wired to the battery it's getting full power.
so if the switch is set to anything but max it won't get full power. does it work on max?
does the fan stop and start over bumps? will it come on if you wiggle the wires? check those.
if there are no loose wires and the fan is not jammed in the heater box try a new motor.

Car just turns off, and will not come back on untill i play with cables.

The old 240's had poor insulation on the engine bay wiring, particularly the alternator and starter loom that runs under the engine. It sounds like your loom has deteriorated. Go to an auto electrician to get it checked out properly.
