Sounds like the ignition switch isn't contacting correctly. How do you turn it off?

Sounds like a condensor or breaker point problem. When it just starts backfiring while running it is certainly ignition related. Most of the time condensors are the culprit but it can be an ignition module or distributor breaker points / sensor (if so installed.) Should not be to hard to sort out. I know most Vette owners are long ago or soon to be mechanics :)

Change your distributor cap and rotor. May even be your points and condensor.

SOURCE: I have a 1984 corvette,

go under the dash above the clutch pedal (u may have to remove the hush panel on bottom of dash to see it) and check the clutch safety switch (locks out starter unless clutch is depressed), there should be 12 volts in and 12 volts out of the switch with the pedal depressed and the key held to start/crank position, if not jump the switch connector until u can install a new one.

Why will my1982 corvette not start

Sounds like the Fuel pump relay.. When you turn on the key you should hear the relay click.. then 1-2 seconds later it will click again and turn the pump off until the car starts. This pressurerises the system so the car starts.. if this does not happen there is no pressure on the injectors.

84 Corvette crossfire engine stalls out when running and trouble restating after stalling out...fuel pump replaced five times along with fuel filter and fuel pump filter...car sitting since 2008 and...

Yea , those crossfire injection vettes can be a bear sometimes . I had dealings with them 84-85 - 86 working as a tech at a chevy dealer . Don't remember much about them , haven't heard anything about them for long time .

How's the fuel pressure ? Have you put a fuel gauge on it ? I would imagine you don't have a Tech 1 scan tool ? What's the map sensor voltage at idle ?

Fuel system 84 chev. Corvette

Jim; have you confirm the fuel pum[ is working? If it is, you should get something out of the fuel rail. Sadly. Pump is a dealer recommended repair cause the pump is more than likely in the fuel tank. Thry should changre you filter at the same time.
