Ford Trader D410 Syncro Gearbox?

Gearbox Synchromesh is getting a bit noisy and resistant during gear changes

Sounds like the clutch
and perhaps a bearing in the gear box
i think you should have the gearbox changed out sooner rather than later
as its still working aok youll get a better exchange price
the company knowing its prob just a bearing set to replace in it
you could change the bearings yourself
but better to get a recon gearbox then take the parts too the garage
this will save you heeps ..
just pay for labour...

what you need too remember is if its gearbox oil level where did the oil go??? so perhaps its just a bad seal {sounds more likely than mechanical failure} but i wouldnt drive it till you fix it as running on low oil is not recommended for obvious reasons

Advice required re: Manual Gearbox Problem - Clutch drag symptoms when changing from 1st to 2nd gear.

problems with a clutch system will result in grating first gear or reverse gear as the input shaft is still being turned by the engine. 2nd gear is syncro operated so any mismatching of gear speeds will be overcome by the syncro ring of the gears. By double de clutching you state that the problem is eased somewhat and this indicates that the gear box is at fault ( shaft bearings, syncro rings, gear teeth ) hard movement of the gear lever would indicate failed gear cable ,linkage or gear lever pivot problems. What you describe is a gear box fault. I would take it back and tell them to fix it or exchange it . Keep all records of conversations and dealings as you may have to get legal help to have the shop full their warranty agreement. Time to remove ,repair and replace a gear box would not exceed 12 hours in an accredited shop

1999 1.4 Ford Fiesta: When depressing clutch a very noisy rumbling sound but gear changing as normal. I added some gearbox oil and the noise stopped. Then, just the following day, no resistance when...

Hi There.
sounds like your release bearing has either collapsed or seized, either way you will have to drop the gear box and check it out... should'nt be a problem on a 1999 fiesta. just be careful not to pop a drive shaft and lose the transmission fluic on the floor.
Good Luck

Got a golf tdi mk4 not going into first gear very well

sounds like the syncromesh which i often have problems with, these VW vehicles use the same gearbox as used on the seat and the skoda as well and they can be a bit troublesome where you get a driver who has never driven an older vehicle which had no syncro of first gear at all so the way they are taught to drive whereby they select first gear whilst still moving ,which as all old hands know is not correct and causes premature failure of the syncros .Hence your problem here .not a lot you can do except to strip the gearbox and replace the syncro

We just had a clutch replaced in our 2003 10,000 mile Ford Foucs 1.6 by a Ford main dealer, when it was returned second gear syncro had gone. When asked they said it was quite common? Do Focus suffer from...

I am just a bit suspicious of the coincidence between clutch change and synchro, especially on an vehicle so little used (10,000 yes?). Can you be sure that the gear box you have is the one you came in with. If you have the VIN number it should be possible to obtain a print out containing a list of the serial numbers of all major components (engine and gear box). Maybe I am just paranoid but it maybe worth checking just to rule out the possibility that rather than change the clutch they swapped out the gearbox for one that was just lying around. Stranger things have happened..

2nd gear is a bit hard when it goes in.... 1st and 3rd are smooth

Change gearbox oil, your car might not have had this performed in 15 years. If the problem is still there, then the 2nd syncro is worn. Replacement isn't as bad as it sounds, but would need a weekend and a few tools. Might even be worth fitting new gearbox if you prefer not to open the gbox, look in a breakers yard.

1972 Triumph Spitfire, 3rd gear grinding

Jumping out of third was a common problem with the Spitfire quick changing up from forth gear would beat the syncro and chip the teeth on the drive dog then the bits would stop the syncro from engaging fully and it would jump out. If you replaced the syncro and the drive hub it may just be a bit stiff, the selector also wore quite quickly and misaligned the drive hub causing it to be hard to select.
I will scratch about in my very old manuals and see if I can find the spitfire gearbox manual, If I can I will post it.
