With a normal handbrake, you can remove some screws around the handbrake covering. The screws are sometimes well hidden so you have to look around.
When you get the covering off, there are two adjusting nuts at the rear of the handbrake. Turn the nuts until you can get "5 clicks" on the handbrake to set the brakes.
Some jack up the car while doing this so they can rotate the wheels by hand to feel when the brakes touch the pads.
Hope this helps

I have not checked a kia carnival but worked on most kia cars. There are two hand brake adjustments. One is at the hand brake lever. open up the hand brake cover and look for the nut adjuster where the end of the hand brake cable is attached to. Tighten up that nut until you find a comfortable hand brake position and the brakes locks.

the other adjustment is found at the rear brake drums. you have to remove the tires and tighten the adjusting nut behind the brake plates. there is a small hole, usually covered with a rubberized plug. remove that plug and adjust the brake with a flat screwdriver.

SOURCE: kia carnival 2003.handbrake light comes

hand brake lights are tied to hand brake, compensation block and somtimes a float in brake res. so check fluid level and to answer your question , yes a leaking rear wheel cyl. will cause a light but in that case it would not take too long to empty brake res. and be out of fluid at least to rear brakes anyway.

Hand brake adjustment on KIA Carnival

The Kia Carnival has drum brakes on the rear and they are self adjusting. They can however be adjusted by working the handbrake lever up and down a few times, if it has not been previously adjusted by using the cable adjustment, then this will probably not work, and it is something I come across quite a lot. if all this fails, then it is a matter of taking the wheels off and removing the drum. firstly check the position of the handbrake actuating lever (its connected to the cable) with the handbrake off (wheels chocked of course) the lever should be as far back as possible to the brake shoe, if it isn't check that you have a little bit of slack on the cable and it is not seized if not adjust the cable off a little so the levers return fully. if you look you will see the self adjuster you can turn the notched wheel a few clicks and then put the drum back on. make sure it is not binding when you turn it (a slight rub is ok) tap the drum (top, bottom, left, right) to centre the shoes (this is important because it will give false adjustment if you don't). once you have done this to both sides, double check both wheels are still running free. replace wheels a try handbrake, it should be ok now. Check how many clicks you need to pull the lever to apply brake and adjust the cable just enough to remove any slack in it, NO MORE. Warning! DO NOT HIT THE DRUM HARD AS IT WILL CAUSE FRACTURES. I hope that has been of some help to you.

Adjusment of hand brake on 2003 Kia Carnival

firstly don't just tighten the cable. take the drum off and check the auto adjusters, you can adjust it by hand by turning it a few notches at a time and replacing the drum t check for it binding. I would also check that the handbrake lever inside the drum is operating correctly, (get someone to put the hand break on and off so you can check it0, also when the hand break is right off, the lever should be right back and not half way, if it is not right back then slacken the cable of until it is. (this is what can stop it from self adjusting too) when you have done this to both wheels and replaced the drums check the number of notches the handbrake lever is coming up. If it is too many, then you need to re adjust the cable just enough to take the slack out of it, this should be now fixed but double check that your wheels are not binding. Another point is if your brake shoes are worn down replace them first. if they have any fluid on them from any leak on the wheel cylinders replace the cylinders, bleed the brakes and replace the shoes.

How do I adjust the handbrake on a Carnival KIA

my favourite ?? i think not but i do have problems with this vehicle as the cable is pulling two different length cables at a funny angle on the LHD models anyway as for the RHd iam not sure of the layout but i would imagine its similar ,fow firstly make sure the cable adjuster under the car where the drivers seat is is slackened off and make sure you oil the adjuster first and leave a while if your in the northern climes as the rain and salt will corrode it ,then slacken the cable off then remove the rear drums one at a time will suffice and make sure that lip on the outer edge is rubbed down i use a small angle grinder for this as it takes forever and day with a emery paper ,then after making sure the wheel cylinders are free by pushing in with a screwdriver ,i then adjust the auto adjuster three clicks at a time till the drum just slides on and a faint rubbing sound can be heard ,then a tap around the drum with the hammer and if the noise stops i remove the drum and give it one click on the autoadjuster at a time till its rubbing with a very slight resistance ,after both drums are done i then adjust the adjuster till three clicks on the footpedal handbrake .job sorted ,slap a bit of copperslip grease over the threads on the adjuster so they do not corrode up again .But i do seem to get unevan braking on the roller brake tester at the inspection station but providing its under 20% difference then thats ok but these vehicles do suffer from unevan handbraking no matter how good you adjust the shoes up even with new handbrake cables as one is longer than the other and goes off at a right angle
