Un do the adjustment . remove any retaining screws in the face of the drum. Use a hammer and hit between the wheel studs. hit the drum back onto the axle flange If the brakes have been adjusted off then the drum will spring loose.

Sounds like the drum was not set fully back on. Make sure it is fully seated and see if it makes a differense.

SOURCE: 2003 windstar rear brake problem.

Take the lug bolts and try putting the broad side against the drum without the tire rim. It sounds like the rear brakes are adjusted too tight. Also check the emergency brakes which may have to be adjusted looser now that the linings are new and thicker.
If you can run the lugnuts against the drum with the broadside hitting the drum you will duplicate what is happening with the tire rim. You will be able to see better and can adjust the brakes without the tire in the way.

Hi!!
Most likely the Wheel Cylinder seals are leaking, you can replace the Rear Wheel Cylinder for $12.99 or you can just replace the seals, sold as a kit for $2.20, at most auto parts stores. Here are pics of both.

Tapping on the sides is the way. Make sure the hand brake is off. Adjust the brake shoes to loose so that they are not in contact with the drum then tap the outside of the drum while pulling out the opposite side. Do that along the whole circumference of the drum and you will see it coming off.

Bad wheel bearing. I do believe yours are pressed in. You can remove the spindle and take it to a shop and have them replace the bearing.

Removing rear drum

1) Block the tires so the car will not roll. 2) Loosen the tire lugs and finger tight them. 3) Lift the car and place jack stand underneath to support the car. 4) Remove the tire. Caution: the dust created by the brake shoes may contain asbestos, which is hazardous to your health. never blow it out or inhale it. use brake spray cleaner to contain the dust. wear approved filtered mask. 5) Release the parking brake. 6) Pull the drum straight out. 7) If it will not come off, remove the inspection hole cover plug from the backing plate. 8) Insert a screwdriver through the inspection hole to disengage the adjusting lever, then back off the adjuster screw star wheel with another screwdriver. 9) Pull the drum out evenly, you may have to tap around the drum with a hammer to break it loose.

I have a 99 dodge ram that I haven't driven in a

Yes you can fix it. Jack wheel off ground after loosing lug nuts. Take off wheel. Pull drum if it wont come off hit it around the center with a hammer. If it has never been off there might be little washers on the studs break them off. If drum still won't come off there are holes in the plate behind the drum the shoes can't get past the ridge on the drum so you take two screwdrivers through the hole and lift up on the lever and use the other one to unscrew back off the shoes by moving the wheel up or down Remove drum take a bunch of pictures of the shoes so you can see how to put them on. Remove shoes. It would help to buy some cheap brake wrenches.Spray the brake line with some type of penetrant and remove brake line. Unbolt wheel cylinder and install new one. Replace brake shoes and springs Have drums turned or replaced if bad Install drums and bleed brakes.Start at the passenger rear fill it with brake fluid put cover on and have someone pump the brakes until the pedal is as hard as it will get Hold the pedal down and loosen bleeder screw on back of wheel cylinder brak fluid will squirt out and when it stops him holding his foot on the floor tighten the screw and pump the brakes up hard again bleed it about 8 more times go to the drivers rear and do the same there then the front passenger side and then the front drivers side make sure the brake fluid stays full if it empties out of the master cylinder to the bottom you will have to start over12_9_2011_6_45_35_pm.jpg

If only the rear tire's are lock, you can still have it towed to your home, set rear of car on jack stands, remove tire, with hammer hit all around brake drum till it breaks loose, used a prie bar on wheel studs, over one and under an other one so you can turn drum.

How do you remove the rear brake drum on a 1954 Chevy 3100 Truck?

Remove the tire, and on the back of the backing plate, you will see a slot which may or may not have a rubber plug in it. Look inside, and you will see a wheel with teeth on it. Using a screwdriver, pry up or down on this wheel to loosen it. If the drum quits turning, then you're tightening it. Once it's loosened enough, the drum will pull right off. Often times, the brakes are worn enough that the drum will come off anyways. On occasion, especially if it's been sitting a long time, the drum may require a couple of blows from a rubber hammer, or a regular hammer using a block of wood to deaden it if you don't have a rubber hammer in order to break the rust loose. You use this same method for rear wheel drive GM vehicles all the way up to now that utilize drum brakes.

How do I remove the brake drums

How to Replace a Brake Drum
(DIY Complexity: Moderate / Time: 2.1 hours)

Parts:
1. Brake Drum

Tools:
1. Jack Stand Set
2. Mallet Hammer
3. Flat Head Screwdriver
4. Floor Jack
5. Combination Wrench Set
6. 3/8 in. Drive Ratchet
7. Tire Iron
8. Socket Set

Supplies:
1. Brake Cleaner

Steps:
Step 1 Secure the vehicle on a level surface, making sure the vehicle will not roll or lean when jacked up.
o Tip: Safety Tip:Always wear safety glasses when working on your vehicle. Wear other personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary, for example latex gloves or safety shoes.

Step 2 Remove the rear wheel hub caps (if necessary) to gain access to the lug nuts. Using a tire iron or lug nut wrench, break loose the rear wheel lug nuts but do not remove.
o Tip: Turn the lug nuts counter clockwise to loosen. If the lug nuts are too tight, use a breaker to gain more leverage.

Step 3 Using a floor jack, lift up the rear of the vehicle.
o Tip: Using an aftermarket floor jack, instead of the original equipment (OE) jack, can make the job easier and safer. Verify the condition of the floor jack before use.

Step 4 Secure the vehicle with jack stands on both sides for safety before starting any work. The pinch welds or the frame rails are the two best locations. Do not rely on the jack to hold the vehicle up while working.
o Tip: Try to find a flat, level, and strong surface to put the jack stands.

Step 5 Remove the lug nuts. Remove the rear wheels.

Step 6 Remove the brake drum by pulling it outwards.
o Tip: Make sure the parking brake is released before removing the brake drum.

Step 7 Visually inspect the brake drum for cracking, scoring or grooving. If any of these conditions are found, the brake drum will need to be resurfaced or replaced.

Step 8 Visually inspect the brake shoe linings and drum brake components for damage or wear.

Step 9 Replace worn components if necessary.

Step 10 Install the new or resurfaced brake drum.

Step 11 Reinstall the wheel. Torque the lug nuts to the manufacturer’s specification.

Step 12 Remove the rubber grommet from the backing plate. Insert a screw driver into the slot and turn the star wheel adjuster to adjust the brake shoes out.
o Tip: Turn the star wheel adjuster until you feel a slight drag while spinning the wheel.

Step 13 Road test the vehicle.

Hope this help.

Can't get into the rear drum to replace break pads.

Do what the mechanics do.
BLOCK THE WHEELS. Take off the handbrakes. Make sure the wheel will turn. Take the wheel off.
Strike the face along the edge of the drum with a large hammer. Hit hard. ( You should have safety googles) Maybe even a sledge hammer if you have it. It's just rust holding it.

2000 chevy cavalier back brake drums

simple enough question first off chalk the front tires jack up the back end put your jackstands under there pull your rear tires if you don't have a impact remeber to loosen your lugs a quarter turn before you lift it off the ground remove rear tires now some drums come from the factory wilh a clip on the studs (an oh jesus clip) pop off with a screw driver some cars as well will have a adujstment hole on the back but if i remeber corretly the cavs dont have one Just incase it does it would be a small capsul shaped rubber plug you would have to pull out then you would use a flat tip screw driver or brake adjusting spoon to back the brakes off if it clicks loudly and is a little resistant to turn your going the right way (OH and by the way make sure the park break is off) If you dont have an adjustment hole its as simple as getting a small ball peen hammer and smacking the front of the drum a few times to get it to break loose from the hub and then lightly tapping around the edges of the drum to drive it outward once again make sure your park break is on
