Hi Dan Armstrong, I want to help you with your question, but I need more information from you. I don't know what adjustments you need. But buying a repair manual would be your best first step. Send me your whole info request and what caused it, if known. There was a recall and new type of bearing required on those trannys.Hi Dan Armstrong, I want to help you with your question, but I need more information from you. follow it from shifter to gearbox,it probably just clicks into gearbox bracket and snaps over ball on shifter linkage, there many be cable tis or brackets holding the cable in place, will probably bolt to shifter on an adjustable linkage
You need to get underneath it to adjust the linkage, which means that you have to find some way to get it in the air some distance, and absolutely impossible for it to fall on you. Lots of people die every year when cars fall on them. When it's raised, take at least two spare wheels (with or without tires) underneath with you - they MUST be at least as thick as your head and your chest. If the car falls, it'll fall farther than you expect it to because its springs will compress for a moment. DO NOT DIE DOING THIS.
Find the transmission. Have someone move the shifter back & forth while you watch underneath to locate the linkage where it connects to the transmission. You'll see an adjustable joint there where you can loosen something (probably a single bolt) and slide one piece of linkage in relation to the other piece. Loosen that bolt and have your helper shift into Park. Jiggle the linkage a little to be sure it's in its internal detent, then tighten that bolt again. Test BEFORE you lower the car.
the shift linkage is directly below your auto transmission shifter. simply place in park, undo the bolt joining the shifter to the transmission, push on the transmission shifter at the other end so it clicks fully into park and tighten the bolt up hard. then check for normal operation.
just remember chances are when your pushing down on the shifter to drive that the direction your pushing at the transmission is reversed so park should be towards the rear of the vehicle and drive is towards the front. but may not always be the case. best bet is to get a mate to move the shifter up and down untill you see exactly what is going on, then adjust your linkage to suit.
2002 neon is cable shift and usually the cable fits in brackets. there is alignment pin in shifter base. put a pin in to hold it in neutral position until you have the cables in place and all brackets tightened then remove the alignment pin and put console back together.
The linkage ratio is off. This is the measurement from the center of the shifter shaft (the shaft that comes out ot the transmission) to the center of where the linkage cable/rod attaches to the arm that bolts to the shifter shaft. This distance needs to be shortened. THis will allow mre movement to give you 3nd and low.
The first thing to check is that your shifter linkage is adjusted correctly and that there are no worn out (sloppy feeling) shifter bushings. If the shifter is OK, then the synchronizers in the trans are worn. You can get the details for the correct way to adjust the linkage from the Bentley manual... Hope this helps...;-)
the body has probably sagged on your truck one side of the shifter linkage goes to the body of the truck the other to the frame.when the body sags a little the angle of the linkage changes and the shifting suffers..........on the fire wall on the steering column is where the linkage connects follow that down and at the bottom of that linkage there it an adjustment bolt.....with the shifter in park loosen the bolt, move the adjuster up on the shaft as far as you can without forcing it too much, tighten the bolt.......adjust as necessary to make it shift properly hope this helps.......Good luck!
