My 86 ltd brougham 3.8 won't start without start fluid. It's not getting squirt of gas when I hit the ignition. when it does start with fluid it getts to much gas floods out. timing and compession are good. is it electronic? relay mabee?
Could be electrical, but probably not a relay.
A mechanic would unplug the injectors and check each one for a short to ground, power from the key switch, and a ground signal from the engine computer.
The injectors won't spray unless the engine is cranking.

i'd suggest getting the fuel pressure checked as sound's like a faulty fuel pump , i'd start there then work your way through the electronic ignition system etc
If it turns, then the battery is OK. Either spark plugs are not firing in proper order (wrong firing order), no power to spark plugs, or no fuel because of fuel restrictions (dirty fuel filter). Inspect the air filter to ascertain its not clogged air. If you smell gas, then you saturated the spark plugs, which is why it refuses to run.
Let it sit for half hour to let spark plugs dry. Inspect to ascertain its not dirty spark plugs, which will also prevent engine from running. After ascertaining its proper firing order, spark plugs are clean, and there's power to distributor cap, ascertain there's fuel in fuel lines by squirting half second (short squirt) of starting fluid into air filter. Close the air filter housing to trap flammable starting fluid gas. Turn engine without giving throttle. Let starting fluid be ignited by spark plugs. If it won't start, then spark plugs are not firing to ignite starting fluid gas. If it starts briefly, but won't run when you give throttle, but catches when a 2nd person squirts more starting fluid into air filter just before engine stalls, then its a fuel restriction issue or no fuel in fuel lines.
Do you smell gasoline fuel ?? When there's too much fuel, it saturates the spark plugs, preventing ignition. Let it sit for an hour to let spark plugs dry, then it starts OK later. Next time, turn starter without giving any throttle or very small throttle as engine turns. Myself, when my 2006 Dodge Plymouth minivan (sitting in storage) needs to start, I squirt (half second) starting fluid into air filter, close the air filter housing to trap flammable gas from starting fluid, then turn the engine without pressing on throttle. When the engine starts is when I give it a little throttle to bring up the RPM to 2,000 until it idles on its own without stalling from cold engine.
If it runs when you spray starter fluid in you know the ignition system and all related systems are working. On an '86 you have an in-take electric fuel pump. You need to confirm that it runs and that it is supplying adequate fuel pressure in the system.
sounds like no gas getting to the carb. plugged fuel filter, fuel line, bad fuel pump. the carb should squirt a little gas when the throttle is pumped. leave ignition off while looking down the carb and pump the throttle linkage to visually check that gas is squirting down the carb with each stroke of the linkage. maybe you are just out of gas!!
check fuel filters if dont work check fuel pump for correct pressure has to have around 40 psi to run car if u can squirt fluid into intake and will run ur fuel system is problem
With the ignition on tghere is a shrader valve on the fuel rail on the engine ( looks like air valve for tire) , remove cap an push down the needle . see if gas squirts out. if not you either have a clogged fuel filter or a bad fuel pump..
There are 3 basic components that enable an internal combustion engine to run.
1. air
2. fuel
3. Ignition or spark
if any of these 3 items are missing the vehicle will not run. I doubt that air is the problem. To me the most likely problem would be fuel. In skynyrd74's case the problem could be the fuel pump, the fuel pump relay, or the injector system itself. To check this you could take a can of starting fluid and squirt very little of it into the plenum of the vehicle and crank it over and see if it fires. DO NOT SQUIRT A LOT INTO THE PLENUM!!!!!! IT CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE!!!!!!!! this is just to see if it will fire. If it does then the problem is somewhere in the fuel system itself and will need to be diagnosed with the proper test equipment and proper test procedures. If you are a DIY'er get a service manual and go through the procedures outlined in the manual for a no-start fuel problem.
If the starting fluid doesn't get it to "puff" or act like it is going to fire, the problem could be in you ignition system. in this case you would need to consult a manual or take to your local service professional for repair because there are many causes for a no-spark condition. DO NOT TRY TO TEST THE SPARK YOURSELF!!!! the ignition system on today's vehicles are extremely high voltage and can cause physical harm or death. DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS YOURSELF!!!!!! I hope this will get you started in the right direction. There are many other factors that will cause a no-start condition but these are the basics to making an engine run and in no way should you attempt repairs if you do not have experience in automotive service. I assume no responsibility whatsoever for any injury that anyone would have happen to them or for any damage to any vehicle by attempting the repairs themselves. You should always take your vehicle to an authorized service center for any repairs.
