SOURCE: change brake light on 2006 Xterra

After you remove the 2 bolts there is 2 cone shaped tensioners that help hold the taillight housing on. Grab the taillight firmly on the top and bottom, and pull it straight towards you until the tensioners pop. They will not be damaged and are made to pop in and out.
Then find the bulb housing of the burnt bulb, turn the housing clockwise, and remove the bulb housing, remove the bulb by pulling on the black base of the bulb only on the short sides on the housing. (DO NOT pull on the glass, as it may break in your hand). Then slide the replacement bulb into the housing (it can go in either direction), and repeat the steps in reverse order. to put the housing and taillight back on.
Be careful to tighten the taillight bolts by hand only, they have a plastic thread sleeve that is easily stripped by a drill.

Brake lights do not shut off nissan xterra 2001

Brake light switch is either bad OR the the stop light switch STOP (in front of switch) has broken and gone. You might have seen plastic pieces on the floor wondering where it came. Get a mirror and look at the switches and in front. If there are open holes in front of the switches and NOT making contact that is why your brake lights are on! Why this is made like this is beyond me, but stupid design.

The brake lights stay on when car is off and when on also

Your brake switch has gone bad. Replace it by removing from the top of the brake pedal. It is the only switch there. Should have a two wire electrical connector going to it. Simply unplug and remove the nut holding it in place and it should come out.

I need instrustion to install a brake switch

It is a generic Nissan brake light switch replacement procedure... the brake light switch on a Nissan Altima i.e. controls the illumination of the brake lights. Without the switch, the lights would not go on. The switch has no service life, so when it goes, it usually happens suddenly. New brake light switches can be obtained from Nissan or from a Nissan dealership.

1. Remove the cotter pin from the pin bolt that holds the brake pedal to the brake booster with a pair of pliers. There is a small cotter pin running through the brake pedal to brake booster connection. You need to pull this cotter pin out to remove the larger pin that holds the brake pedal to the brake booster.
2. Slide the pin out of the brake booster mounting bracket.
3. Pull up on the brake pedal to slide it out of the brake booster mounting bracket.
4. Remove the bolts holding the brake switch to the firewall using a socket wrench.
5. Remove the electrical connector on the brake switch by pulling it straight off the switch.
6. Slide the switch off the firewall.
7. Install the new switch. Installation is the reverse of removal. Make sure that you replace the cotter pin in the brake booster to brake pedal connection. The cotter pin prevents the retaining pin in the brake booster mounting bracket from coming off.

Hope helps (remember to rate this answer).

I've just replaced the brake light switch on my Chevrolet S-10 pick-up. The brake lights stay on as if I have my foot on the brakes. How do I adjust the switch? Calvin

  • 1 Remove the negative terminal on the battery using a wrench. Look up under the dash and follow the brake pedal arm up to the switch. Pinch the tabs and pull the electrical plug out of the brake light switch.
  • 2 Remove the nut closest to the brake pedal arm using a socket. This allows the switch to be removed from the bracket.
  • 3 Install the new switch by adjusting the rear nut, closest to the electrical plug, back toward the plug until it is a few threads away from the plug. Remove the front nut closest to the button. Push the switch into the bracket with the button facing the brake pedal arm. Install the nut on the button side of the switch.
  • 4 Push the switch in until it contacts the arm and depresses the button. At this point, use your fingers to turn the front nut back until it contacts the bracket, keeping the switch from pushing back out of the bracket. Adjust the nut as necessary to assure the button is depressed against the brake pedal arm without moving the arm. Run the rear nut up to the bracket to lock the switch in place. Tighten the rear nut with a wrench.
  • 5 Install the electrical plug on the brake light switch. Install the negative terminal on the battery, and tighten with a wrench
