The coolant leaks out to the ground but not in the oil or engine. I was told its the head gasket

Honestly, I've never heard of such a thing. If the gaskets are replaced and the engine is cleaned out and the fluids are changed, there shouldnt be any long term problems. If theres no damage now, there wont be any after its fixed. I would highly recommend getting a second opinion before you commit to anything. A small piece of advise though, if you decide to replace the intake gaskets, you may want to go ahead and replace the head gaskets as well. It's not much extra work to do it once the intake is off, and you wont have to worry about a head gasket letting go after everything else is done.
SOURCE: I just had my oil changed on my 2001 gmc yukon,
Stop every hour or so and check your coolant. Also check your oil frequently and make sure it's not milky. I personally wouldn't want to get that far away from home in it until I know it is not going to leave me stranded.

I was going to say water pump but no block the water inlet to throttle body and let run a while can you smell a sweet smell or steam comming from your tail pipe Next is a die test you can do . Put the die in your rad and go for a 5 mile ride now use a cheep black lite $3.00 at lowes the leak will show up. good luck CJ

If you pull out your oil dip stick and it has a milky light brown color then you have a bad head gasket. Also if you over fill the expansion tank it will flow out of the overfill hose. There should be a mark on the side of the expansion tank for the coolant level. Also it could be that you have a bad intake gasket. In order to check that I recommend that you take it to your local repair shop for that diagnosis
SOURCE: shop hours to change right
It's about 10 hours. But you find a shop that will do one side. I wouldn't. And depending on the miles you might not want to do it at all. When you do one side you stand the chance of have compression difference , and this will cause vibration in the engine. And if you have high miles, Say 200,000+, you stand the chance that the heads are sealed and blow out the rings on the pistons. This causes burning oil (smoking) and oil leaks, because the compression is blowing in the crank case. Add about 4 hours to do both sides
