Most dealers now go for the 10000 km oil change, my opinion is its too long for short stop and go driving . I recommend to all my customers change oil and filters at 5000 km , some of my customers have clocked 400,000 km on petrol motors trouble free.

SOURCE: Changing engine oil every 5000 KM or every 2500?

The service duration is affected by many things.. If you are driving in a dusty atmosphere or doing a lot of high RPM but low gear driving, change the oil every 2500kms. if you do mainly highway driving with low rpm but top gear, change the oil every 5000 kms. As a rule, I always replace the oil filter at every oil change even though toyota says you dont have to.

How to reset change oil soon light

Oil Life Monitor Resetting (KD, KE)
Description
The engine oil life monitor will indicate when to change the engine oil and the engine oil filter - usually between 5 000 km (3,000 miles) and 12 500 km (7,500 miles) since the last oil change. Under severe conditions, the CHANGE OIL message may be displayed before 5 000 km (3,000 miles). The vehicle must not be driven more than 12 500 km (7,500 miles) or 12 months without an oil change.
The engine oil life monitor will not detect dust in the oil. If the vehicle is driven in a dusty area, be sure to change the oil every 5 000 km (3,000 miles) or sooner if the CHANGE ENGINE OIL message is displayed.
Reset the oil life monitor when the oil has been changed.
Resetting Procedure
Press the INFORMATION SKIP button on the DIC control panel in order to display the OIL LIFE LEFT message.
Press and hold the RESET NO button until the display shows 100% ENGINE OIL LIFE.

Why does the transmission oil gets heated when the vehcile runs for 100+km at a stretch? The smoke can be seen from under the hood. The gearbox went through a complete overhaul recently so the gearbox is...

Hi there,

Transmission fluids gets hot because of the mechanical friction associated with interconnected gear rotation. The harder the transmission works, the more friction is created; in turn more heat. Transmission fluid breaks down from use; heat accelerates this degradation. When oild degrades it provides less lubrication, in turn resulting in more friction and more heat.

Average transmission fluid should run close to 200 degrees Fahrenheit, but based on loads can run as high as 350 F. Sustained high heat will break down the oil faster shortening useful life.

I would check the transmission fluid colour: red is good, brown is dirty, black is burnt. If your transmission is burning (smoking) then the oil will show it.

Engine crankcase oil also gets hot, and can burn. Check this oil for the same indicators.

As noted by Andrew, a simple leaking gasket could be causing a drip leading to burn off.

Purchased focus sport 2006 model no service manual. Mileage 43,000 kms. Need to know service intervals either time/mileage perhaps a copy of the service schedule will suffice.

These maintenance intervals come from the maintenance interval calculator
at www.autozone.com, using a starting point of 25,800 miles (43000 km), and
assuming 1000 miles (1666 km) driven per month, and "severe driving conditions," which
are actually normal usage characteristics, such as frequent short trips, urban driving, waiting in traffic, driving in hot weather, trips under 16 km in cold weather, etc.

Would a rough 2nd gear change be due to low gear lubricant or transmission fluid? It feels notchy, and I have to change gently and let the clutch out slowly ..would a lubricant help?

It is usually due to dirty unchanged fluid and/or the lack of fluid. Every one I know that has ever owned a Honda says to put 5w-30 engine oil into the transmission. I have never felt a smoother shifting transmission than a Honda filled w/ engine oil, NO JOKE!!!. Ask around on some forums, by all means get a second or third opinion.

City driving is about the hardest thing you can do to engine oil. If your primary driving is city driving it would be advisible to cut the oil change duration by a third to help keep it clean.
