Will start for many times then won't start

Recently had a computer module replaced (something that allowed the engine and battery to communicate???). Now it randomly won't start and the security light comes on. Starts fine a bunch of times, then won't. Ruled out battery, starter, and alternator. Dignostics check only signals a security breach. Using the same keys and remotes as always.

SOURCE: 2000 chrysler grand voyager hard to start

check temp sensor with a scanner and fuel pump pressure some part stores can help with this if all that checks out there is a chance the crank sensor is getting bad and that may be able to be adjusted a little closer that is on top rear of bellhousing you can take it out 10mm and put a tick piece of paper on the end and reinstall

SOURCE: Car ran fine earlier today.

Sound like a starter go to bad or died. You can do a few tests to diagnose a starting system problem without any tools or measuring equipment. Turn on the headlights and start cranking. If lights go out, you probably have a poor battery cable connection that is impeeding the flow of current. Start checking battery posts and battery cables for tightness and corrosion. A very thin film of oxide between the terminal and cable clamp can choke off most of current. Clean battery posts and cable terminals. Make sure all connections are tight. Also check connections to the starter and solenoid and engine-to-chassis grounding cables.
If headlights continue to shine brightly and nothing happens, voltage is probably not reaching the starter. Usual suspects here include a problem with the park/neutral or ignition circuit switches.
If lights go dim and the cranking action is sluggish, first suspect a low battery.

Starting problems especially in cold weather on a system that worked well last summer can often be traced to a weak battery. Sub-zero temperatures can cut a battery's amperage output by more than half. Check out the battery condition. If the battery checks out okay, look for a locked or dragging starter, a starter with high internal resistance, worn brushes or open circuits in starter's windings or armature. Additional details in this link: how_to_test_a_starter_motor.

Other posibilitie, the ignition switch.

According to this charging system isn't working correctly ! This is a computer controlled charging system .
Principles of Operation
The powertrain control module (PCM) controlled charging system determines the optimal voltage setpoint for the charging system and communicates this information to the voltage regulator. This system is unique in that it has 2 unidirectional communication lines between the PCM and the generator/regulator. Both of these communication lines are pulse-width modulated (PWM). The generator communication (GEN COM) line communicates the desired setpoint from the PCM to the voltage regulator. The generator monitor (GEN MON) line communicates the generator load and error conditions to the PCM. The third pin on the voltage regulator, the A circuit pin, is a dedicated battery voltage sense line.
The charging system voltage is controlled by the PCM. The generator charges the battery and at the same time supplies power for all of the electrical loads that are required. The battery is more effectively charged with a higher voltage when the battery is cold and a lower voltage when the battery is warm. The PCM is able to adjust the charging voltage according to the battery temperature by using a signal from the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor. This means the voltage setpoint is calculated by the PCM and communicated to the regulator by a communication link.
The PCM simultaneously controls and monitors the output of the generator. When the current consumption is high or the battery is discharged (the PCM recognizes this and increases the output of the generator to accommodate), the system is also able to increase the idle speed to increase the charge.
To minimize the engine drag when starting the engine, the PCM does not allow the generator to produce any output until the engine has started. The PCM then progressively increases the output of the generator.
The PCM turns the charging system warning indicator off after the engine is started and illuminates it under fault conditions (when the generator is not generating the correct amount of current with the engine running). The charging system warning indicator is also illuminated by the PCM whenever the key is ON with the engine OFF.
This is a System 4 charging system, which uses the GEN MON and GEN COM lines to control and monitor the charging system through the PCM. System 4 charging systems are virtually identical in design and therefore, share the same diagnostics. The circuit numbers and colors may be different, but the functions are the same.

2001 buick century stalled without warning. tried to restart, but wouldnt crank, no fuel pump noise, no click. had power to radio, heater fan, flashers but not dashboard lights (prndl, fuel gauge).

Make sure battery has a full charge and battery connections all good. Check fusible links where applicable. Any component that doesn't work and is fuse protected, not only check the fuse, check the fuse circuit for voltage, use a test lite.
The wiring diagram is for starter circuit, you can see the fuses. Any testing for starter motor, make sure tranny is in park or neutral and parking brake is set. It is possible to jump crank relay to see if starter motor will crank, but, that doesn't mean it will start. Make sure vehicle can't move.

No crank no start no engine code , will start if disconnect battery to reset system

Make sure battery has a full charge and battery connections all good.
Yes, a module resets when you do that, the question is, which module? On the can buss system there are about 15 modules, can one module cause problems for others, yes.
If you have good enough info to locate all those modules and disconnect, one at a time, to see if other systems will work, fine.
You might be able to use manufacturer specific scanner to communicate with modules, to track it down. Those type scanners can be expensive. I don't have one.
Just about anybody here answering questions can crank the starter motor for you, just for testing, but, that doesn't mean it will start and run? If you want to try that, I'll help you.
The problem might be something very simple, but, at the moment, I don't know?
If somebody has a better answer, I'm certainly willing to learn.
Just a thought, if communications problem with modules, there should be a U code. I realize you said there were no codes.

How do I replace the computer chip that controls the gauges and sensors on my Buick Lacrosse?

What computer chip ? Your vehicle has up ten computers on the vehicle . PCM - engine control module , BCM - body control module , SRS - air bag control module , EBCM - electronic brake control module , The instrument cluster has a microprocessor inside , the heater / A/C control panel is a control module .All the control modules on your vehicle are connected on a serial data communication network .
There are 2 different communication networks on this vehicle: The class 2 network and the GMLAN network. The class 2 serial data circuit is the low speed link, and the GMLAN serial data circuit is the high speed link. Modules that need real time communications are attached to the high speed network. The engine control module (ECM) is the gateway between the networks. The purpose of the gateway is to transfer information from one network to another.
When one of these modules is changed it needs to be programmed , unfortunately the dealer is the only place to have it done at. A GM factory scan tool is needed to do the job ! If it's not done correctly the whole vehicle network will lock up, making the vehicle inoperable .
Class 2 Serial Data Link
The class 2 serial data link allows the following modules to communicate and share data with each other:
?€¢
Body control module (BCM)

?€¢
Digital radio receiver

?€¢
Electronic brake control module (EBCM)

?€¢
Engine Control Module (ECM) (LY7)

?€¢
Instrument panel cluster (IPC)

?€¢
HVAC module

?€¢
Powertrain control module (PCM) (L26)

?€¢
Radio

?€¢
Inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM)

?€¢
Vehicle control interface module (VCIM)

The GMLAN serial data communications circuit used on this vehicle is in a linear topology. The following modules are connected to the link, in order from DLC to the end of the linear configuration:
The following modules communicate on the GMLAN serial data circuit:
?€¢
The transmission control module (TCM), (LY7) 3.6-L

?€¢
The engine control module (ECM), (LY7) 3.6-L

I very strongly suggest you don't try to fix this problem !

When turning the key it would start sometimes but die right out. Other times you had to hold the key in the on position for 10 seconds or so and it would start. Headlights would sometimes flash and car...

I have seen similar "crazyness" caused by communications problems in the computer network. If you scn your entire computer network you will most likely find several "U - codes" (U1000, U1006, etc.) which indicate that modules are losing communication with other modules within the network.

These type of problems are usually caused by a faulty charging system (sulfated, shorted battery, bad alternator diodes, Loose/corroded battery cable connections, etc.) or loose or corroded connectors at one or more of the computer modules.

Scanning your computer network would be the place to start. The modules like to tell on one-another. For example: if the communication loss is in the body computer, the engine control module and/or the instrument panel module, and/or the antilock brake module will have codes saying that the body control module was/is not communicating. In this example, I would take a hard look at the connectors at the body control module.

If several of the modules are all reporting loss of battery voltage at the module, then I would suspect a battery cable, bad ground circuit, etc. Please note that the engine control module will usually NOT report this type of code because it does not use capacitors to keep it "alive" with the battery disconnected like some of the modules such as the body control module and the passive restraint module.

Just replaced transmission ~1991 Ford Explorer ~ now won't start

I think you disturbed a connection in the transmission repair area becuase the antitheft system needs to communicate with the powertran control module and your encoded key to allow the engine to start. The antitheft module disables the starter and also will not allow the engine to start if there is not proper communication. look for fully seated connections and be sure there is no modue attached to the old trans that should have been transferred.
