I think you should check the fuellines and for sure the injectors, these are most probably blocked. It can also be the fuelfilter that is clogged
Staert by replacing the filter and try to start.Once its starts leave it running stationary and remove the fuellines one by one from the injectors. If you loosen the first one and the engine rpm go down a bit you know the injector is good...tighten the fuelline again and move on to the next one and so on.

possible in-line feul filter clogged up. / air leak possible from inlet manifold, spray WD40 on inlet manifold around ports connected to cylinder head whilst engine running, engine speed should increase whilst sucking WD40 through any gasket leakage.

SOURCE: 4g93 gdi engine starts wont rev above 3000

Hey have you tried disconnecting and re connecting the battery? my mitsi carisma startd doing that so i rang up dealer and aparently they do it when the computer thinks there is something wrong with the engine, so it enters slow mode (or turtle mode or something) so that minimal damage is done while you drive it slowly to yr mechanic. Could be complettly wrong tho. Good luck.

If you have a hih miles truck,it is very possoble you have aclogged cat.Have a muffler shop test pressure in front and behind by drilling small holes, checkin w/gauge,then welding back. This should be free if you replace the cat.

Low fuel pressure, the fuel pump is failing it cannot give correct amount needed to sustain a load higher than 2000RPM. plus you verified it when you sprayed into the intake.

Golf mk 4 gti turbo starts up but wont rev past 2000rpm

turbo is malfunctioning the turbo waste gate is not working take it to a shop right away, preferablly tow it so as not to damage the engine, if the exhaust gas's gets near the turbine bearings you will burn up the engine and the turbo cna explode like a hand granade and destrou your enging.

Sounds like it is starving for fuel...the other guys sound right...check your fuel filter and fuel pressure...if the filter is nearly stopped up the pump would build pressure which would "push" past the filter and make it feel more powerful...then as the pressure drops it starts to starve again until the pressure builds up enough. Also, with the vehicle parked and running, get someone to rev it up while you feel the air coming out of the exhaust...if it isn't a good amount of pressure coming out of the tailpipe, your converter may be stopping up. be careful not to get burned by the exhaust though.
