I have a 2002 VW TDI with 140,000 miles, but engine was rebuilt after broken timing belt, and trans was replaced under warranty at 98,000 miles. My problem is that the engine cranks eight or nine times when starting next morning, even though car is parked in indoor and heated garage. All services have been performed right on time and I use nothing but MOBIL 0-40 OIL and high quality oil filters, etc, etc. It has a new timing belt (the newer type which came out in 2003) Glow plugs are all okay according to my mechanics. Use nothing but #2 high quality fuel and power boost additives in summer and anti-gel in winter (winter for us in in Tucson, AZ) What can I do to improve the starting situation?

Hello, I have something that might help you. If you know where your fuel line goes into the engine. I would let it sit overnight and then take the line loose. Then hold the fuel line into a bucket and have someone turn on the key in the car. This should tell you how fast you are getting fuel up to your engine. Your problem sounds alot like its not getting gas up to the engine fast enough. I would check these things:

1. Fuel Filter
2. A bent or crimped gas line. (From Engine Rebuild)
3. You could even have a blockage in your tank ventilation. This would cause a vapor lock not allowing the fuel pump to work properly.

Outside of a fuel issue from your previouse history It could be still in your timing. If you find my information helpful please rate me and have a great weekend! :>)

Try a new fuel filter. also the timing might be out a tooth causing hard cold starts but it will start fine when warmed up.

Timing belt broke did it bend any valves

This engine has been identified as an interference engine in which the possibility of valve to piston damage in the event of timing belt failure is most likely to occur, when repairing I would also replace water pump, due to pump is timing belt driven. On an 2002 VW Jetta TDI 1.9L engine, VW recommends timing belt replacement every 80,000 miles.

Bad news, on the right hand side of the engine is a cover with 4 clips on it. I bet when you remove it, you will find a munched timing belt. It will be an expensive fix.
