First your car is an OBDII ready, it is easy to pull a code so I can help, check engine lite flashing usually means you have a dead misfire, you will be able to figure what cylinder is in trouble 1-3-5 are on back (fire wall) and 2-4-6 on front(radiator) when a knock sensor is bad usually lite stays on, hope this will help.
This sounds like a problem I had. It turned out to be the Knock Sensor and if not changed soon, it will damage your alternator, A/C and battery. Without it the car will not have enough power to function properly. The first step you need to take is to look for the diagnostic box under the hood. Use a piece of wire to bridge E1 and TE1. Turn on the ignition, do not start the car and check the engine light. Count the number of times it flashes. Mine was five flashes followed by a pause and then two more flashes. Code 52 represents the knock sensor. The knock sensor looks somewhat like a plug and is located in the middle of the back of the engine block. You can reach it without jacking the car. Use a mirror to have a look at it.
You can purchase one online and install it yourself. Just disconnect the battery lead before you do so.
I hope this was helpful.
Sound like you need a tune up ..or if your motor blown a flashing light mean bad then a steady light... you need to get the code for that and tell us about it if you need to know where your code plug is it on the driver side change box I call it ..you need to pull that out and your see it use a code reader or can be a injector too for the fuel.....one or two when bad...
The flashing light usually means the problem is serious enough to damage the catalytic converter. Have you checked the engine computer for trouble codes yet ?

Take it to autozone and have them to pull a code on it.It sounds like O-2 sincer
SOURCE: engine light is flashing on, and is running rough!
WHEN THE LIGHT IS FLASHING IT MEANS THAT YOU HAVE A MISFIRE. I SUGGEST YOU REPLACE PLUGS AND WIRES. BECAREFUL DRIVING BECAUSE ALTHOUGH UNLIKLY, IT COULD BE MORE SERIOUS AND CAUSE A FIRE
SOURCE: engine running rough, poor acceleration especially
well theres one or a few problems there, could be incorrect ignition timing, fuel injection malfunction, worn or dameagedignition components, faulty amission system, vacuum leak, spark plugs. a good tune up should do the trick. good luck
SOURCE: I have a 1998 Toyota 4runner that has the check
could be the egr, injectors, among other things, best to get the engine scanned on a real time scanner, else you are just guessing
