Very likely tell you that you have low engine oil level. I surprised that you didnt kill engine driving like that. If oil level is ok then it may indicate low engine oil pressure. See mechanic.

While an electrical fault or a faulty switch could put the light on, it is such an important light it should never be ignored and the reason for it established immediately. As far as the owner is concerned that means lifting the bonnet and checking the oil level and adding more if the level is low. If it isn't low the car should be recovered to a repair shop. Driving further could be very expensive and very inconvenient...

If the oil pressure light has switched on because the oil pressure is low then continuing to drive will soon wreck the crankshaft bearings or cause crankshaft or camshaft seizure. Damage happens so quickly if the oil pressure is lost at motorway speeds the engine is likely to be severely damaged by the time the car is stopped.

I strongly suggest you have the reason for the light switching on established and repaired.

It is a warning for oil pressure. Stop, don't drive, check oil level on the dipstick, if it's ok, check to see if the connector on the oil sender unit has not come loose and is touching somewhere in the engine. It could also be a faulty oil sender. If all this is "Greek" to you, get a mechanic to check it out

Verify that the engine has the proper amount of oil. The inertia from accelerating may be moving the oil in the oil pan away from the sensor and causing it to send a signal, then when you slow the oil levels out and the sensor go's off. I've had this happen alot with a taurus that I owned. The simple solution was to top off the oil to the correct level and the sensor did not come on again (until it ran low again, had a leaky oil plug on oil pan).

First check that the oil level is appropriate. If the level is in the proper notch in the dipstick, you might have serious problems. Oil is heavy when cold, and produces acceptable pressure. When the oil warms up, it is less dense, and its ability to produce pressure is reduced. If during normal warm up and driving, the pressure drops below what is acceptable for the engine, the oil pressure light will come on, warning you that major engine damage is impending. Stop driving the car, and take it to a shop for inspection.

If your oil level is full, light is off and no abnormal engine noises, if should be ok to drive to the shop. If light does come on, stop the engine. I would also have the shop check your oil pressure with a manual gauge, to determine the exact oil pressure reading. This could save you from major engine failure due to low oil pressure. check for proper oil level in engine with dipstick if ok.then install mechanical oil pressure gauge on oil pressure sending unit to verify proper oil pressure, if pressure ok. then replace the sending unit/sensor, if pressure not ok. , you may need to remove engine oil pan to check for restriction on oil pick-up tube screen. if ok replace pump. but also check clearance on mains and connecting rods.

this is a light that indicates low oil pressure or low level, 1st check the oil level in the engine when it is hot, if that is ok you will need to have the oil oil pressure tested with a specail mechanical test gauge, don't wait on this, low engine oil pressure or level can quickly lead to engine failure, have a shop check this ASAP if level is ok and light still comes on.

either your eng. oil pump is failing or just so low on oil that the pick up tube cant pick any oil up, check eng oil level first, if level is ok....then your oil pump is definitely failing
