This is an interference engine and if the chain breaks you could have problems with the valves and pistons.

SOURCE: how to replace a timing chain 2000 chevy cavalier

I am familiar with that vehicle but generally with timing chain replacement, the engine needs full access for pulley and cover removal and in some cases the cylinder head requires removal.
Generally timing chains last so that they only need replacement at engine overhaul and it is not an economic proposition to have to replace a chain unless some relative degree of engine work is also required at that time.

Engine timing chains generally have a tensioner on them which maintains tension, but some chains can wear significantly and cause timing cover to be "ground away" because of "slop".

If the engine is making the noisy rattle of the timing chain against the cover etc, I would schedule a top overhaul (head, machine, test and valve grind) with the chain replacement dependent on mileage with the degree of action.

Some simple simplex timing chains (type of chain similar to motor bike chain) may be replaced without dismantling the engines but I would expect your chain would be a "duplex" dual sprocket type, these are most common.
These chains are not generally expensive but replacing them can involve a fair amount of work.

Good Luck and hope this helps, Others will have different ideas.

SOURCE: does a 2001 chevy cavalier have a timing belt?

You have a timing chain, don't have to change it like you do a belt.

SOURCE: have a 94 cavalier 2.2 liter,timing chain

Install the cam sprocket, timing chain, and timing chain cover. Make sure the dot on the crankshaft gear is pointing towards the center of the Camshaft gear bolt. Make sure the hole in the Camshaft gear is pointing towards the center of the crankshaft. Be sure to remove the nail holding the chain tensoner back, before installing the timing cover The round hole in the cam gear is the alignment mark

My timing chain went and they are telling me that it is an intereference engine and should have belt rollers... What does this mean and the car was not driven when it went it was merely being started. I...

If it broke while being started you more than likely have very little piston or valve damage even if it is an interference engine which I am not sure of. I have no idea what they mean by belt rollers when talking about the cam chain. It is a chain not a belt. You should be able to remove all spark plugs then spin the engine over with the starter an check the compression. If the compression is good then you more than likely have no serious damage. At that point all you can do is replace the cam chain and see what you then have. Once you get this fixed, sell the car.

Rough idle timing chain? 2004 chevy cavalier

Sounds like a 2.4 Quad four engine? If so the chain has either different colored links marked links that have to be aligned with the marks on the cam gear[s] and the crank gear.A chiltons book will show you how.

If the timing chain is broke, dose the engine have to come out to repair it.

no you don't need to pull the mtor, the front of the motor must come apart after removing the radiator and all belts. There is a chance if the timing belt broke the cylinder head's valves may be damaged call the chevy dealership and ask to speak to the service dept. ask them if your year make and model car has an interference motor in it, if it does have one there's a good chance you bent a valve or two at the time of the belt breakage.

2004 chevy cavaliar 2.2liter engine turns over but wont start. Im looking for timing belt placement.

Hello chriso201: My name is Roger and I can answer this question. The Chevrolet Cavalier 2.2 engine does not have a timing belt. This engine uses a timing chain. Check the compression if you have less then 100 psi on the cylinders I would think timing chain. Any thing over 100 the chain should be ok. I would prefer to see above 150 psi. Should you need further help please just ask. Please rate the answer you received. Thank You for using Fix Ya. Roger

Will a timing chain/belt cause your car to stall out when driving it and not allow it to start up after it stalls?

I had a timing chain problem, It made a noise for about 3 years and it decided to break last May, the engine just totally stopped. My 99 cavalier had 164,000 miles on it. My friend and I found out the the cavalier 2.2 eng. has a non interfer timing chain. so when my timing chain broke it didn't cause any damage.
