The running board on my vehicle will not retract and the motor is making a horrible grinding noise? How can I switch off the boards so that they stay out permananetly?

If the running boards are out before start your vehicle, open door,go to your fuse box and pull the fuse. The back of the panel will tell you what each fuse is for and location. This'll keep them from retracting.

2009 Cadillac Escalade
Some power running boards are stuck (in cold weather) due to lack of lubrication. Shoot WD-40 to free up stuck joints.

However, if you have your running boards stuck in the up or down position after a dead battery or other issues, here is how to reset them WITHOUT the need for a dealer service or scan tool:

Power running boards are locked from the factory to the dealership, this is how to unlock them as part of dealer prep.

To activate and unlock the articulating running boards for normal operation, perform the following procedures:

Open all front and rear doors.
Set the parking brake.
Find the running board disable switch located on the center console below the HVAC climate control system.
Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position, with the engine off, and toggle the disable switch three times within 20 seconds to activate the power running boards.
Close all doors.
Open the left front or left rear door and the running board on the left side should articulate out.
Close the left front or left rear door and the running board should articulate in.
Open right front or right rear door and the running board on the right should articulate out.
Close the right front or right rear door and the running board should articulate in.

The articulating running boards will now operate when opening either the front or rear doors on that side of the vehicle. A power retract operation of the running boards will occur with the closing of both doors on that side of the vehicle.

I own a 2007 and the running boards are controlled from the information center in the dash. If you hit the setup button until you get to the option for running boards, you can hit the reset button to select "auto", "in", or "out". If out is selected it will keep the out all of the time. Hope this helps!

At THE END of All These Instructions Are MY NOTES and Suspicions
I will be Totally Honest with you here after A Lot of Reading on the System.
I'm Not POSITIVE this will Work But after Looking @ ALL Available Schematics, Diagrams and Ligature the Only Way I Can see to Make them Do What YOU Are Asking Is to --
WHILE BOARDS are EXTENDED (OUT) Disconnect the RETRACTABLE RUNNING BOARD MODULE, and With NO Power They May Stay in the Extended Position. to do this Fallow these Instructions.

Remove the RH C-pillar trim panel.(Kick Panel @ Left Ankle While sitting in Driver Sea
Disconnect the retractable running board module electrical connectors =2
. Do this as I Said With the Running Boards are EXTENDED or (OUT) If this Fails try SAME as Described But Disconnect the MOTORS Located Undercarriage Forward of Rear Wheels on both sides.
It Sounds as if Maybe GEARS are "STRIPED" @ Motor & ACTUATOR Lever for Boards. I've had numerous issues just this summer with my 2008 LTZ Suburban. The dealership has replaced the battery, some module and, it's back in as we speak to have both runnimg board motors replaced because they both locked up again! A friend of mine owns a 2009 LTZ Suburban and has started having intermittent problems with her running boards, too. When it's time to up-grade, I will NOT be getting retractable running boards again!!

Electric aerial on 1998 Toyota Celica

The grinding noise means that the gear in the motor slides over the retracting shaft, you will probably need to get a new one.

There is an electric motor located below the cup holder on the passager side of the third row, whats it purpose? It started to make a clicking noise and was disconnected.

could be a few things if it is a loaded navigator since the have so much, my best guess would be that it is the air compessor for air shocks in rear if equiped, other guesses would be the electric motor for retractable running boards of if it has a power hatch sorry dont work on navigators, but want to give ya something to go from hope this helps

There is a technical service bullitin for this problem. They just replace the linkeage, and also the motor. Very common problem.

Running board stopped working

More than likely you accidentally disabled the feature if you have already checked the fuses and they are good.
Your owners manual tells you how to re-enable the power deploying running boards .
I'll paste a copy of the directions for you :
***********copy***********

Enable/disable:
To enable/disable the power running board feature, refer to the Message
center in this chapter.
• When this feature is disabled <OFF>, the running boards will move to
the stowed position regardless of the position of the doors.
• When this feature is enabled <AUTO>, the running boards will move
back to the correct positions based off of the door positions.

(Message Center )

Setup menu
Press this control for the following
displays:
• Reset to English (if in another
language)
• System Check
• Oil Life
• Units (English/Metric)
• Autolamp Delay (if equipped)
• Easy/Entry Exit
• Air Suspension (if equipped)
• Autolock (if equipped)
• Power Liftgate (if equipped)
• Power Deployable Running Boards (if equipped)
• Compass Zone (if equipped)
• Compass Calibration (if equipped)
• Language

Power Deployable Running Boards (if equipped)
This feature automatically deploys the side running boards for easy
entry/exit from the vehicle or for cleaning.
1. To disable/enable the power
running board feature with the
vehicle in P (Park), select this
function from the SETUP control for
the current display mode.
2. Press the RESET control to select the running boards setting as
follows:
• AUTO: the running boards will automatically deploy when a door is
opened and automatically retract when the door is closed,
• OUT: the running boards will remain deployed regardless of the doors
being open/closed. This setting can be used when washing the vehicle, or
accessing the roof rack. The running boards will stow and enter AUTO
mode when the vehicle speed exceeds 5 mph ( kph),
• OFF: the running boards will remain IN regardless of the doors being
open/closed.

Let me know how this turns out.

Power running board failure

This is not really solving the problem, but my dealer told me that they could unplug the harness to keep the running boards in the down postion. The running boards have to be in the down position to make this happen.
