My 1989 CRX DX was having issues while I was driving the motor would surge then the check engine light would come on and the motor would shut down. It would crank over but not start unless I let the car sit for 5-10 minutes then it would start and drive for a little while and do it again. I replaced both the distributor and the main relay and have been trying to test the car by driving it to see if it is going to do it again and so far so good but this time while driving the check engine light came on but the car kept running and isn't running bad so I tried and pulled the code and it came up code 16 and am wondering if the fuel injection system could be what was causing the original problem or if this is something new and if there is a way to tell if its an injector by checking a plug or something. Thanks Brian

jrtvett's "unplug one injector and start" troubleshooting procedure would work if one injector is bad. If more than one injector is bad, then not so sure.
Like you mentioned, one or more injector(s) can go bad and it causes the others to stop working as well. After our experience, I am convinced this observation (fault mode) is correct (see below). Its as if upon warmup the solenoid in the faulty injector shorts, resulting in short circuit of signals to all the other injectors.
We have a 1989 Olds Cutlass Ciera with the 2.8L V6 that recently had the same fault: At least one injector went bad after warmup, then engine refused to restart. All other possibilities were eliminated, including crank shaft sensor, ECM, ignition pack, idle start valve, bad gas, rail pressure, etc.
No Service Engine light illuminated, and there were no fault codes in the ECM computer.
The jrtvett procedure could not easily be utilized in our case because all the injector connectors are underneath the intake manifold and inaccessible.
My cousin is a Ford mechanic told me of an analysis procedure Ford uses to troubleshoot injector problems. They display rail pressure on a LCD or CRT monitor and can see pressure drop with each injector's opening. Unfortunately, if the car is not starting, then this test will not be of much use. The engine has to be idling or at least all of the solenoids in all of the injectors operational to use this test. If engine won't start, then its clear none of the injectors are opening as described above, then no fluctuations in rail pressure would be displayed.
The shop that was working on our car decided to replaced all of the injectors, and the engine now runs like new.
Due to inaccessibility of injectors and fact these injectors were inexpensive ($40-$50 each), it was wise just to replace all six. Grading old injectors is not exact science.

My honda crx is starting over but won't idol properly and will stay on for a few seconds before dying. i checked to make sure gas is getting to the engine and it is.

I have same car 1989 honda crx, what worked for car was I took the Idle Air Control Valve ( IACV ) off and cleaned it with carb cleaner. What you will need is a 12mm socket and only has two screws, and pliers to take off two small hoses attached to it.. And most important carb cleaner to clean the inside of IAVC. Plus you can also search for this on the Internet ...1989 honda crx Idle Surges! Hope this helps...

I have a 91 honda crx dx model..i was sriving down the freeway and the engine stopped..i had full power lights and all and the car wouldnt start again for about 10 minutes then it finally started

Main relay has dry joints. Remove it, from under the coin tray in between door and steering wheel under dash. Resolder the join and refit. You don't need a new one, just the joints are dry.

Very common and gives you the willies when it kills you car on the freeway.

Vote for me if this helps you.

My 1989 Honda crx si surges on the rpms. It will go from about 1800- 900 rpms and back again. What's wrong?

It's called hunting. You need to clean out the EAVC unit in the intake manifold. Take off the air filter and housing, run carb cleaner through the intake for 20 minutes or so.

Next bleed the radiator by taking the rad cap off and start the car, let the fan kick in twice (about 20 mins again) and the air bubbles will have been forced out.

Take the car for a spin and the vote for me when it's fixed :)
