I put G12 50/50 coolant in my 2008 vw jetta months ago, now I have a leak and just to prevent from over heating I topped off 50/50 but I noticed all over the inside of the hood was white powder. Did it crystalize and cause the leak?

Thanks Colin. I thought it was like a hose from the top that came loose but the leak is really bad when the engine is on under the car. Passenger side by the oil pan. It doesn't seem to leak if the engine is off atleast not to the same noticable degree.

SOURCE: volkswagen jetta over heating

hi tammy
it could be an air lock stopping the water from circulating properly i seem to recall this problem on the older VW Derby and audi 50 (same engine) there is a small bleed screw at the highest point on the cooling system that allows you to bleed this air out youll find its location in the manual

another thing to try is put a flushing agent through the system incase there are any blockages in the radiator itself

hope this helps

Where can you find the radiator cap in a volkswagon bora v5

Janet, top up your coolant in the coolant reservoir/expansion tank it is the rounded bottle closer to the shock tower.. Remove Blue or Black cap when engine cold and top up, run engine till warm and recheck after cool and top up again if necessary. Make sure to have leak repaired sooner then later to prevent future costly repair.
Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

2003 vw 18.t temp lights goes on but temp gauges read normal

If your coolant overflow is bubbling then regardless of what your gauge says you are having overheating issues. If your coolant is missing with no aparent leaks then you need to check your oil for a milky consistency and apearance which would most likely point to a blown head gasket. This would also explain overheating. Hope this helps

2008 vw jetta makes noise from blower

I would say your heater core has a leak and needs replacing. Moisture is getting into your blower motor and it will seize up if you run it that way.

1998 beetle leaking coolant

First of all, it's a VW, so it shouldn't have ANY "neon green stuff", it should have pink G12 coolant from VW. If the leak is getting worse, it's a hose failing, and splitting worse and worse under the cooling system pressure. find the leaking hose and replace it, but I'd recommend using a VW specific mechanic, so the "neon green stuff" doesn't make it back into your car, where it shouldn't be.

Coolant leaking regularly but no evidence. Heating system has deteriorated...difficult to decondense. any ideas?

The MK4 VW's has a nasty habit of coolant (Glycol) buildup where it's leaking. It won't show on the floor but very noticeable where ever it's leaks if you know what to look for. As mentioned, checking your head gasket would have a high percentage causing your problem.

If it were a head gasket problem, steam would come out of your exhaust vaporized from the hot metal parts. If you don't have that, you can either check your oil for brown gooey consistency or the same goo in your coolant reservoir.

VW uses an after run auxiliary pump to keep the coolant circulating inside the hot engine block after shut down. This prevents the breakdown of the coolant from cooking itself from the hot engine block. With the use of an after run pump, circulation of coolant in the system after shut down happens and can last as long as 10 mins. Liquid coolant in a hot state leaking out will solidify as soon as air cools it down.

One day I topped up the water on my 97 VW Jetta Trek and forgot to put the cap back on the expansion bottle. Well the antifreeze ended up all over the car and the fan control module beneath the bottle. The...

yes vw is very dependant on the cooling fan coolant pressure and expecially coolant mixture, check the gasket on the expansionbottle, as that can cause problems too, anyone of these will result in overheating

2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee leaking coolant and power steering fluid

Just a heads up, $10 bucks will buy you a seal kit for the P.S. pump. I topped mine off for a couple months, then the oring on the high pressure line (from pump, front center) blew and dumped the reservoir in a matter of miles.

The line can be a stinker to get off, recommend driving the car for a few minutes to heat up the pump a little. Don't forget the 20MM wrench.

I have a 2003 VW jetta tdi

You've lost engine coolant somewhere, and need to fill the engine back up with the VW special G12 coolant.

Then find the leak, which will be in one or more of the following places -
Water hoses to heater core, including any other coolant carrying hoses in the engine compartment
Radiator hoses
Plastic manifold bolted to side of engine which is known to leak (have replaced on an '01 VW Beetle, and an '02 Jetta, both members of our family in the past few years.).
Overflow reservoir cracked
Radiator leak.

Reply back what you find. If the engine got too hot, you may need to have the thermostat replaced.

Constant light on dashboard

My '01 TDI had the same issue and apparently it was a switch gone bad behind the horn and airbag. . . so no idea if the airbag would have worked had I been in an accident. Definately worth going to VW and having it looked at though. Better safe than sorry.
