Have someone check your brake calipers for sticking and holding the brakes applied. This can cause overheating and they will try to stop the wheel, causing the violent steering wheel shake. Also have them check the constant velocity(CV) joints, which if bad can make steering stiff.

SOURCE: 1996 mercury sable speed hand and drives in strain and ****

I hace a 19196 sable-the problem is the transaxle speed sensor-this part sends all speed info to the computer ..-First symptom(speedometer stops working and then transmission shifts erratacially and power steering becomes hard and engine light comes on..The computer on this all eletronic car cannot send proper signals to the speedo-trans-power steering and other functions without knowing how fast or slow the car is going..Have the SPEED SENSOR mounted on top of the tranaxle replaced and all will be well.Part is not to expensive.labor can vary depending whether you have 3.0OHV or DOHC engine-some cars have to have exhaust dropped to get at it-Good Luck All

SOURCE: steering wheel feels loose. Took to garage, had

This sounds like you need new track rod ends, this would cause free play in the steering, also it could be the bottom suspension arms. the garage should have checked these though! if the wheel is vibrateing then it may need the wheels rebalanced. if it is that you steering will shake at 60mph

Weird steering problem.

This sounds to me like it may actually be your steering gearbox, Chevrolet is known for having gearbox issues. Sounds like there may be a dead spot in the gearbox, but it is only noticeable at higher speeds and not slower speeds. Would recommend having it looked at. Usually a suspension issue wouldn't cause that type of feeling. Hope this helps.

Powersteering, radio, windows won't work

Hello and thanks for using FixYa!, the problem with your sable is that the transmission range sensor needs to be replaced, back in 1996 and 1997, the circuitry internal to the sensor caused an interference with several other systems in the car, including the radio, power steering and power windows. Have the sensor replaced and it will need to be adjusted, so it is best done by a ford dealer who would have the proper alignment tool.
