3.1L engine ticking noise

Problems started to escalate a few months ago, for the longest time my car had the chronic piston slap that this car has been known to be plagued with. but as with every other car the noise would tend to go away within the first few min. of soft driving. About two to three months ago the ticking became far more obvious at the start and continued to tick whenever the car was running. The very noticeable times when i can hear the tick is while it is in idle and and during the very first parts of acceleration. I have changed oil regularly and done all normal maintenance. Mind you this car only has 49,000 miles on it. Should not be having these sorts of problems yet. Two weeks ago my father and law and I decided to delve farther into the engine and see if the problem could be a bent push rod or anything else that we could see. after we got the valve cover off found that all push rods were in good straight order, mind you we took out one at a time and replace one at a time as to avoid confusion. noticed however that the rocker arms had a side to side movement in them that seemed to cause a slight ticking noise. I guess my first question would be is this a normal thing for the rocker arms to be making this noise, and second what else could this noise be? I am starting to get tired of chasing a phantom noise. Already changed oil with several difference viscosity's had cleaned the egr valve. added lucas to the oil. Would like a solution that doesn't involve going to a mechanic. Please help. Thank you My son bought a gr. prx last fall with only 60,000 miles, had a slight ticking that went away after short drive, now it has gotten worse, I work at a dealership and have been told it is only a piston slap, are we risking having a major problem with this car, should we get out of it now before the engine blows

It really just sounds like a stuck or bad lifter. Have you tried an oil additive for unsticking lifters?

Try taking out all spark plugs and turn engine over with starter. If you still hear the tick it could be a loose timing belt or failing tensioner. I had a tick problem that started only when cold but got worse & worse until the timing belt jumped. It was the timing belt tensioner. When the belt is loose, the valve springs snap the valves shut after the camshaft passes the highest point.

If you noticed any wear grooves on the rocker pivots, it could be that the rockers are worn. changer any that show obvious wear. Some movement of a rocker when not under tension is normal but should not be excessive. You can also check to see if any rockers have less travel than others by slowly turning engine by hand and measuring the travel on each (intakes may vary from exhaust, but should not vary from other similar ones) If any move far less than others it can be due to a collapsed or worn lifter, or worn cam lobe. Piston slap is a different issue and usually can be identified only by a good tech with lots of experience.

I have a ticking noise from my engine

Ticking noises from an engine, even an SBC, are never normal, Richard. You may be hearing lifter noise (one bad lifter) or excessive valve lash, or both... or you MAY be hearing a small exhaust leak from one manifold. If the pistons you put in aren't a really good match for the cylinders, you may be hearing "skirt slap", which will devolve into a really bad situation later down the line when the piston skirts break off. You may possibly be hearing bearing rap from either rod bearings or main bearings, if they were a little too loose, or timing chain slap if the tensioner isn't working right, or looseness in the distributor drive, or even spark snap between a plug cable and the block or head.

Knocking sound when engine is hot

Sounds like car has been overheated and has a collapsed piston skirt. This will cause piston slap until piston heat up and expand.-------------------------------------------------------------------------

95 Lincoln Town Car: Engine Makes Loud Tapping Noise

It has to be internal. Is it your valves or a slapping piston? (Sorry but internal engine problems are hard to diagnose without tearing down the engine)

My engine make a sound like there is no oil in the car but after a few minutes it stops. Do i need a heavier oil

No, check the oil level and you can add Lucas engine oil additive. The Lucas oil will add fluid retention to your oil and will keep the piston slap to a minimal. It's common on newer cars with high tolerance engines like yours, and if the engine was not warmed up prior to driving it hard will cause the engine to have piston slap much worst throughout it's life. You can do a search on GM piston slap problems to give you some more information to the noise your describing. There are a few things that can help, add Restor engine oil additives and Lucas engine oil to your regular engine oil service maintenance time. This will help with the waring up the engine before you go for your drive, good rule is the engine is warm enough when you start getting some heat from the heater. Good luck and keep me posted, be glad to know this helps your Saturn. It has for many on here with the same problem.

Experiencing a "ticking" "knocking" type noise when 1st starting the car in colder weather that goes away once the blazer warms up , any help ?? I was told it could be the exhaust manifold , or piston...

it may need a lifter or valve adjustment when cold they will tick or knock depending on how loose or worn out then when it warms up they swell with heast and noise stops. after adjusting or replacing it will stop making noise

Alright, so my sister came over and when she was leaving she started her 2002 olds alero and i heard a ticking sound. It sounded like more than one lifter was ticking. Is this a sign that the oil pump is...

That tricking noise is common on the 3.4 gm engine's. It's called piston slap, you get it most of the time on first start or when you turn the car off and it just cooled enough for the pistons contract again.
There is nothing we can do about it, with the newer engines being built with higher tolerance you get annoying  noise.
Best thing to do is to do oil and filter changes every 3000 miles, and warming up the car about 3 min before driving off.
The way you engine was made, you don't have to wait since there is tolerance for expansion but your going to wear out the cylinder quicker.
I find that adding Lucas Oil treatment with every oil change has eliminated the piston slap from my wife's Montana. Good luck and hope this helps.

3.1L engine ticking noise

This a piston slap. GM recognised this problem years ago but instead of repairing 100,000 motors they call it "normal". If it goes away after warm up you should be ok to keep driving it.
