2000 chevy cavalier i don't know what else it is other than V6. car has no lights on except when it actually stalls the battery light comes on. Thats it. No engine or other service lights. In my opinion it idles a bit rough. Not all the time though only when its about to stall. Each time it stalls it starts up again just fine and will usually go. Especially if I let it sit for a few minutes. Two days ago it started squealing really loud and I have not heard it do that since or after. It starts up strong. I also believe I hear a hissing noise when im in the car that also just started. Does any one have any suggestions. Anything is greatly appreciated
Time tu du some regular maintenance--the squeal probly a worn belt--affectin the alternator -hissing sounds like a vacuum leak--chec all hoses--also inspect ignition wires and distributer--buy a haynes repair book in a partsplace-detailed for the homemech
Testimonial: "Very good solutions and knowledgeable Im glad Arnie was here to help out!"
Thank you so much for your help Ill definitely be looking into all those for sure. I just bought the car about two weeks ago so wasnt sure about anything on it. Also I live in michigan and for those weeks that ive had it its been horrible bad snow storms and constantly way below zero with negative 40 wind chills. However I started it up today and drove all over Im talking I took it for about a 20 mile drive and havnt had any problem and the idle seems great. However I am not getting my hopes up by any means I will still do the maintance. Do you possibly think this horrible cold weather weve been having been a cause? today its 45 out first warm day in a long time and it seems to be running great. But like i said I am not confident it was just the cold.
w an old car bad weathr can effect it--metal and rubbr contracts and can break if worn--complete inspection shud b done-but not all in one day

Sounds like the injectors may be bad or just really dirty. You say that the truck is only used as a plow truck, so I would assume that it sits alot. If you dont add any fuel stabilizer to the tank, the fuel will start to degrade and the will gum up your injectors. One thing you can do is to pull the air cleaner assembly off and look at the injectors while the truck is running. Look at the bottom of the injectors while it is running. The injectors shouldbe spraying fuel with a fan spray of fine mist. If you see any drips of fuel in the this fine mist, that injector is at least dirty or on its way out. I would recommend that you change your fuel filter and then get some fresh fuel and the purchase some Seafoam fuel injector cleaner from your local parts store. Dont mess around with anything else. GET SEAFOAM. If it is in a plastic bottle it is not strong enough to do anything. Seafoam is in a metal can. Dump the seafoam in and run the truck as much as you can. This will help clean out the injectors.

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls and low idle rough idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve (IAC for short), they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

It sounds like the torque converter clutch. Just unplug it. It is the square 4 pin plug on the front of the transmission. Once it is unplugged and you get it unlocked, it will be fine. Just leave it unplugged, it won't hurt anything.

Have they checked your TPS sensor as this is the most common cause for rough idles and stalls...

I had the same exact problem on my 2004 Colorado (3.5L). Cleaned the MAF sensor (with MAF sensor cleaner) and throttle body/plate - cleared it right up.
