It may be helpful for you to get some idea of the mechanism involved in operating the shock absorbers in your vehicle. Refer this information. It may then be a matter of finding the parts involved if replacement is required
Generally the switch to turn off/on the air suspention is located inside a side compartment at the rear of the vehicle. Before lifting a car with air suspention, you have to turn it off to keep it from being damaged. find the switch and see that it is turned on. The owners manual tells where the fuses and relays are located.
these cars have indepentant rear suspention with mant moving parts possible upper and lower control arms, rear swaybar, torsion bar very hard to say with out pictures. recommend garage and put on lift tire removed and inspection by trained tech. comparing setup to a suspention diagram
I had a very similar problem, ended up removing the rear suspension rubber air springs , covering them with soapy water and then partly inflating them with a DIY compressor, was easy to see rubber air springs had started to perrish and leak in the 1/2 way down. I was convinced it was not the air springs as often the car would not sag for a day or two.- fitted new air springs ( agents only,as far as i know ) and X5 is 100% Towed a heavy trailer last weekend and perfect. ( i fitted them myself jack the car up and should take you about 3 hours.) good luck
i believe there was a recall on the bmw 318 e36 for there rear suspention being improperly installed or wrong dealer numbers for parts was put on vehicle
this is from a worn or wrong type shock that was placed on the vehicle and your vehicles tires are hitting the wheel well
