1989 Toyota Camry, The car won't start.  The starter cranks, but with a whining sound and the engine cranks slowly. Starter was tested and said to be good. Sounds like there isn't enough power or maybe it's lacking spark. Jumping the battery doesn't help at all. Any ideas?

Thank you...

Check the backlash of the starter it may require a shimm if it has a high pitch wind when starting....make sure the flywheel isnt damnage or missing teeth...

It could be a weak starter motor. when the motor is in the engine it will not turn fast enough since the brushes in the motor are almost burned out or worn off. but if you take out the same starter and test it out side it will work because there is no load on it. but after putting the motor if the car still does the same thing then that might be the engine it self.that can cause by over heating or running the engine with no oil or very lil oil.

89 Toyota Camry crank no start

crank no start has ZERO to do with P/N park neutral switch the P/N switch prevents cranking only !
yes all cars ran before and not now after 34years later.
ever seen a 1989 car still on the road.? super rare.
no crank as 6 causes, p/n is 1 of 1.
no starts (cranks fast) has 50 causes
so as you can see what is going on now really matters.
we can not hear your starter in this text box
you must tell what it does, (dead, clicks, silent , or chatters or sounds normal.
before replacing parts diagnose the problem first
or go broke super fast.
start a post for this 89
tell all it does good and bad ,not just good.
see?
and any thing odd, tell that.

1994 Camry won't start, other times starts right off, battery or starter problem

I'd really need to know if it cranks OK. If it cranks but won't fire, I'd suspect the EFI main relay of sticking. Take that out and tap it, then replace.

If it won't crank, and then does, I think the main contacts at the bottom of the starter solenoid are worn out. Intermittent operation is typical of that.

My 1988 300 E stops running after 10 min and will not start for 30 min. when cranking the motor to start it sounds like the timing is off

It can be the issue with weak battery or faulty battery or if battery is ok,then its faulty starter causing the issue.

1989 toyota camry starter cranks with a high whinning sound but no spark to start engine

TOYOTA IS NOTORIOUSLY KNOWN FOR BAD STARTERS!!!! OPEN THE HOOD AND HAVE SOMEONE CRANK THE STARTER WHILE YOU LOOK TO SEE IF THE ENGINE IS ROTATES, WHEN THE STARTER IS ON.

IF THE ENGINE TURNS VERY SLOWLY OR NOT AT ALL, THE ENGINE IS FINE. BUT, THE STARTER HAS A BAD SOLENOID AND IT'S NOT ENGAGING THE FLYWHEEL. THERE FOR IT'S SPINNING AT VERY HIGH SPEED MAKING A LOUD HI-PITCH WHINNING. BUY A NEW SOLENOID AND FIX IT YOURSELF!!! BUT TOYOTA WON'T SELLL YOU JUST A SOLENOID BECAUSE THEIR GREEDY!!! A NEW STARTER FROM TOYOTA IS AROUND $350.00. AT AUTOZONE AROUND $100.00 WITH A LIFETIME WARRANTY! BUT IF THE SOLENOID SWITCH IS BAD IT COST AROUND $250.00 AT TOYOTA, & $99.00 AT AUTOZONE. ALSO CHECK THE THE STARTER RELAY, COST ABOUT $150.00 AT TOYOTA AND AROUND $40.00 AT AUTOZONE. PULL THE STARTER OUT AND GET IT TESTED AT AUTOZONE...( FREE!!!)
" I'M ABOUT 100% SURE YOU STARTER IS BAD!!!!" GOOD-LUCK!!!

Starter making whining noise

sounds as if your starter isn't engaging, usually due to either the solenoid not operating the bendix or a bendix fault, to prove a point, if the vehicle is a manual, put it in gear, handbrake off and push the car forward ( which will turn the engine into a different possition) then put h/brake on out of gear and try starter again, if it tries to turn over its possiby the starter ring gear, if not it's starter.

My 2002 Toyota Camry won't start, I tried jump starting it, but the starter won't even turn over or crank.

well in this case it can be the starter. you need to check if you get power to the skinny wire on the starter wile you crank. if yes then it is the starter. in worst case if you drove the car with out oil or if it got over heat too much. engine could be locked.
