I ran my 93 190e out of gas to many times. I didn't know I was suppose to change the fuel filter. So needless to say it finally wouldn't start. so I replaced the fuel filter, air filter, spark plugs, plug wires, distributer cap and roter. Then it was taking so long to get it to start it killed the battery so I got a new battery and it still wont start. What could it be

WHAT ABOUT AIR OR WATER IN THE FUEL LINE?

  • Stephen Dec 15, 2013

You will need to have the fuel pressure checked at the fuel rail and check for spark at the plugs.

i did this exact same thing and it was the pump itself easy fix and not to expensive

Need to see if you have spark at the spark plugs. Then check fuel pressure at the engine. Do you hear the fuel pump run a few seconds when turn the key on (without cranking)? If you don't hear ir running, could be pump, relay, fuse.

It sounds like you did run it low on fuel one too many times and damaged the fuel pump. The restricted fuel filter was also most likely causal to its failure...if indeed that's the reason it wont start. You or a mechanic need to perform a fuel pressure test and compare the readings with the factory specification. Also check for rapid pressure drop with key off after pressurizing. And for heaven's sake stop throwing unnecessary parts and money at it! Question what's the probability that all those parts failed simultaneously? You would have paid less to have it professionally diagnosed...

The best approach to diagnose this problem is to troubleshoot first to determine the cause, then replace the failed parts. If you suspect fuel flow, test the fuel pressure in the system. Hopefully you can test pressure at the injectors just to see if you are getting fuel to the engine. If fuel pressure is low, then test pressure closest to the fuel pump. Keep checking at various points in the system until you find the place between where pressure is good and then bad. If it's bad right out of the pump, then there's your problem. If fuel pressure is good to the engine, it could still be an the fuel injectors (if it's a fuel flow problem). If it's no spark, that should be fairly easy to check. Connect a spark tester between a plug and plug wire and see if you have spark (nice white spark, yellow is a weak spark ..not usually good). If spark is not present, or weak, than you'll have to look at the ignition system. You've already replaced a lot of parts, but it doesn't mean there isn't a broken, burnt, or shorted wire in the system. Check for 12v at the coil with the ignition key turned on. If 12v is there than troubleshoot to the coil/distributor than towards the spark plugs (obviously the problem is not likely to be in the parts you just replaced), but just the same, test the system as a whole. One thing could cause another to fail, even if it's a new part. If there is NOT 12v at the coil, then troubleshoot why there is not 12v at the coil back through relays, fuses, etc to find why 12v is missing. A Haynes manual with wiring diagrams might be helpful for troubleshooting the electrical stuff. Best of luck resloving this problem.

Get compression test. Make sure all valves are seating. Check injectors for fuel flow. If all elce fails. Move to a warm state. (Just kidding..!)

You might just need to replace your fuel pump. If you can hear the pump run, I'm not sure what pulling the fuse is supposed to do for you? The pump is just an electric motor, it either runs or it doesn't.

Ran out of gas, car wouldn't crank replaced fuel pump, fuel relay, and in line fuel filter and still won't crank on 2002 chevy avalanche

still won't crank ? how's your battery ? starter ? starter solonoid ? if your engine does'nt crank , its dead ! would'nt you check the battery first ? then move on with checking the starter circuit ? seems like your putting the cart before the horse ! first of all, when you run out of gas, you need to replace the FUEL FILTER, your engine just sucked the dirt, garbage, etc., out of the tank. there's plenty of sediment in the tank, don't know how it gets there, but, you'd be surprized ! talking threw experience !!! I operate heavy equipment, its a cardinal sin to run out of fuel !!! you say you replaced the inline filter, which one, up by the engine or the main filter, under vehicle along frame ? are we talking about the same animal, PLEASE CLARIFY !

Clogged fuel filter

you must have an extreme amount of rust and sediment in your gas tank. you probably need to drain it completely and flush it out. I wouldn't use water to flush it as it will just cause more rust.

Car ran fine shut it off came back it didn't want to start. started went about half a mile sputered an died wouldn't start back up 1991 subaru loyal wagon

Hi sounds like the typical fuel pump or filter problem with these cars, best way to tell is take top fuel hose off on fuel filter under hood, turn key on ignition (not start) and fuel should pump out, if not its your pump, just beware of doing when engine is hot

Rough idle and lack of power

Since you have fuel injection for fuel delivery, something has to tell the system how long to have the fuel injectors open, and something has to tell the system when to activate each fuel injector ... unless you have throttle body injection. Do you know which type of fuel injection you have? I will need that answer above before telling you anything useful.
